Troy Pig Out: BBQ, Music, and Competition in Downtown

A Vibrant Celebration of Food and Community
TROY, N.Y. — One of the most anticipated summer events in the region made a triumphant return this weekend, drawing locals and visitors alike to experience a day filled with mouthwatering barbecue, live music, and friendly competition. The annual Pig Out event took place in downtown Troy, showcasing the best of the Capital Region’s culinary talent.
As soon as attendees arrived, they were greeted by the aroma of sizzling meats and the sounds of lively entertainment. The streets were bustling with people eager to sample the diverse offerings from local restaurants. Many competitors brought an array of dishes, each with its own unique flavor profile and cooking style.
Joe Friedel, owner of Dotty Lou’s BBQ, shared his team’s menu with reporters. “Our competition item is a brisket slider. We’ve got Pork Belly burnt ends, we’ve got Saint Louis style ribs, we’ve got our signature Texas Twinkie, we’ve got cornbread, coleslaw, some mac and cheese. We got all the fixings,” he said.
This was the third time Dotty Lou’s participated in the event, and fans were thrilled to see their favorite dishes on display. Parker St. Germain, an attendee, expressed excitement about the Texas Twinkies. “I’m definitely looking forward to those at Dotty Lou’s,” he said.
The event wasn’t just about food. Vendors offered locally crafted beverages, while live music added to the festive atmosphere. Attendees also had the chance to see wild birds that are not commonly seen up close, adding an educational element to the celebration.
A Day of Fun and Competition
Competition among restaurants wasn’t the only highlight of the day. A hot dog eating contest drew attention as locals tried to devour 10 hot dogs in under five minutes. Mayor Carmella Mantello, one of the judges, shared her thoughts on the event. “It’s just so much fun, you know, it’s no Joey Chestnut, but I got to tell you, they are on the verge of a Joey Chestnut hot dog eating contest! So, it’s a lot of fun and you know, it’s beautiful. You’ll see so many families, it’s so family friendly,” she said.
Whether participants were aiming for the Pig Out Champion title or simply enjoying the food and music, the event proved once again why it remains a beloved tradition in downtown Troy. It brings together the community in a way that celebrates both local talent and the joy of shared experiences.
