The victim has been identified as Halie Renae Johnson, who was driving a Volkswagen at the time of the collision. According to local police, she was struck head-on by a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup, a 53-year-old man whose identity has not been released, was taken to the hospital for treatment following the crash.

A family member of Johnson reached out to 3NEWS via phone on Monday and expressed that the entire family is still reeling from the shock of the loss. The tragedy has once again brought attention to the dangerous conditions on this busy stretch of road, which has seen numerous incidents over the years.

According to data from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), there have been more than 900 crashes along State Highway 361 in the last ten years. Out of these, 15 resulted in fatalities. Many of these deadly accidents were linked to alcohol consumption, as well as other contributing factors.

Sergeant Rob Mallory, a spokesperson for DPS, highlighted the most common causes of fatal crashes in Texas. "When we look at fatal crashes in the state of Texas, those are the top three reasons: speeding, intoxicated driving, and distracted driving," he explained.

Despite the high number of incidents, DPS does not plan any specific long-term operations on Highway 361. However, Sgt. Mallory noted that law enforcement monitors several areas within and outside of Nueces County. When there is an increase in fatal crashes, intoxicated drivers, or speeders, troopers will adjust their patrols accordingly to enhance safety in those zones.

The recent accident serves as a grim reminder of the risks associated with driving on this highway.
