Traffic Surge on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road Before Northlake Blvd Closure

Temporary Traffic Shifts in Effect for Major Road Closure
A temporary traffic shift will be implemented on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road and Northlake Boulevard starting Tuesday. This change is expected to last for 60 days, as officials prepare for a significant road closure that will impact several key areas in Palm Beach County. The shift is part of broader efforts to manage traffic flow during the upcoming construction period.
The main closure involves the intersection of Northlake Boulevard and Beeline Highway, which will be shut down for nine days. This closure is being carried out by CSX, a rail-based services company, to replace the railroad tracks. The shutdown is scheduled to begin on Friday at 8 p.m. and will continue until August 10, just one day before the start of the new school year in Palm Beach County.
In addition to the track replacement, CSX has also pledged support for the Beeline Highway Widening project. This initiative aims to expand Beeline Highway from four lanes to six lanes, improving capacity and reducing congestion in the area.
While the traffic shift on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road is not directly related to the CSX closure, it is intended to help ease congestion at the affected intersection. According to a news release from Palm Beach County, the detour routes have been carefully planned to minimize disruption.
Detour Routes for Travelers
For drivers traveling southbound on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, the detour will involve heading south to Murcott Boulevard, then west to Banyan Boulevard, south to Hamlin Boulevard, and finally east back to Seminole Pratt Whitney Road. The reverse route will apply for northbound traffic.
Travelers moving westbound on Northlake Boulevard will take a different path: they will head north onto Apache Boulevard, then west on Tangelo Boulevard, and finally north on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road. Eastbound traffic on Northlake Boulevard will follow a similar pattern when coming from the southbound direction on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road.
Impact on Residents and Commuters
The CSX closure will affect a large portion of the local population, with estimates suggesting between 50,000 and 60,000 residents in the Acreage, Loxahatchee Groves, Ancient Tree, Ibis, Royal Palm Beach, and Westlake communities. These areas rely heavily on two major east-west corridors: Northlake Boulevard and Okeechobee Boulevard.
To accommodate the closure, traffic will be rerouted through several alternative roads, including Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, Southern Boulevard, Military Trail, and Northlake Boulevard. Law enforcement officers will be present to assist with traffic flow and ensure safety.
Additional alternate routes include Coconut Boulevard, Orange Boulevard, Royal Palm Beach Boulevard, 60th Street, State Road 7, and Okeechobee Boulevard. However, officials note that these alternatives may add time to commutes. According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the main detour could take between 51 and 57 minutes during morning and afternoon rush hours.
Public Communication and Community Outreach
To keep residents informed, FDOT has launched a comprehensive community notification campaign. This includes sending mailers to approximately 55,000 households, email blasts, and digital messages on Interstate-95 and the Florida Turnpike. Additionally, 23 messaging signs have been placed throughout the affected areas to provide real-time updates.
Palm Beach County Vice Mayor Sara Baxter addressed the impacted communities, emphasizing the importance of patience and cooperation. She stated that the temporary disruptions are necessary to improve infrastructure safety and efficiency. For more information, residents are encouraged to visit the official website at pbc.gov/epw.
Additional Impacts on Public Transit
The closure will also affect public transportation services. Palm Tran, the local bus service, has announced that bus and paratransit routes will experience detours and delays. Officials urge riders to plan accordingly and check for real-time updates.
As the region prepares for this major infrastructure project, residents are advised to stay informed and adjust their travel plans to minimize inconvenience.
