Top Destinations for Retirement in the UK According to L&G

Chesham and Amersham, located in the scenic county of Buckinghamshire, have been named as the best places to retire in Britain according to a recent index compiled by L&G. The area is celebrated for its convenient transport links to London, historic and charming streets, and its role as a gateway for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the beautiful Chilterns region.

L&G highlighted that Chesham and Amersham performed exceptionally well on health measures, with a significant proportion of residents over 65 years old reporting good physical and mental health. The area also scored highly on financial security, access to nature, and community engagement, making it an ideal environment for retirees.

The study evaluated various factors that contribute to a fulfilling later life, including healthcare access, opportunities for social interaction, proximity to natural spaces, availability of local amenities, and financial stability. These elements were measured across six key pillars: housing, health, social and community, financial, nature, and amenities.

Mid Dunbartonshire in Scotland and Monmouthshire in Wales claimed the top spots in their respective regions. The rankings were based on a comprehensive analysis of data from sources such as the Office for National Statistics (ONS), census information, and housing reports. Additionally, Opinium survey findings from research involving 3,000 UK retirees in April 2024 were considered. Retirees with life satisfaction scores above the median average were identified as the happiest.

Lorna Shah, managing director – retail retirement at L&G, emphasized the importance of a balanced approach to retirement happiness. “Financial security plays a crucial role in enabling other aspects of well-being,” she noted. “It allows retirees to make choices about where and how they want to live.”

Regional Highlights

In England, the south west region excelled in terms of housing, considering factors like access to residential care homes and availability of senior-friendly housing. Areas such as Bristol Central, Gloucester, and Bournemouth East stood out for their suitability for retirees.

For social and community connections, the Fylde area in Lancashire was the top performer, followed by Lowestoft in Suffolk and Dorking and Horley in Surrey. This category assessed factors such as the number of adults aged 65 and over, life satisfaction levels, reported happiness, and proximity to transportation.

The East of England fared well in the nature pillar, with Castle Point in Essex, South Holland and The Deepings in Lincolnshire, and South Cambridgeshire in Cambridgeshire ranking among the top three. This evaluation included air quality, the number of summer days, and the availability of private outdoor spaces.

London constituencies dominated the amenities pillar, with the Cities of London and Westminster, Holborn and St Pancras, and Islington South and Finsbury securing the top spots. Wales and Scotland also had strong representation, with Dwyfor Meirionnydd in Wales and Glasgow East in Scotland placing fourth and fifth respectively.
