A Community in Mourning

The El Paso community is deeply grieving the loss of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Cacique José Sierra Sr., whose passing was announced on Saturday, Aug. 16, by the tribal community in the Lower Valley. Sierra, who had served as the cacique since his appointment in 2017, was a revered figure known for his leadership and dedication to the Tigua tribe.

As the spiritual leader of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Sierra held lifelong terms on the tribal and traditional councils. His role extended beyond governance, as he was seen as a unifying force for the community. In a statement, the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center expressed their sorrow and called for prayers for Sierra and his family during this difficult time.

Closure and Impact on Local Events

In honor of Sierra’s passing, Ysleta del Sur Pueblo facilities and the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center have been closed until further notice. This includes the cancellation of the TLC concert that was scheduled for Saturday at the Speaking Rock casino. The entertainment center has long been a popular destination, offering a mix of gaming and live performances.

El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego shared his condolences on social media, expressing that the community was “profoundly saddened” by the loss of Sierra, whom he described as a friend to El Paso County. Local leaders praised Sierra for his collaborative efforts with various government bodies to improve the lives of all residents in the area.

Recognition from Leaders and Organizations

El Paso County Commissioner Iliana Holguin, representing the Mission Valley, extended her deepest condolences to Sierra’s family and the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. She highlighted her honor in working with Sierra and the Tribal Council to benefit the community. Many other organizations and individuals also offered their sympathies, including the city of Socorro, the Ysleta Mission Our Lady of Mount Carmel, El Paso Rhinos Hockey, U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso, and State Sen. Cesar Blanco, D-El Paso.

The Inn of the Mountain Gods in the Mescalero Apache reservation in New Mexico also joined in mourning. They acknowledged Sierra’s legacy and leadership, stating that his impact on the community would be remembered. Their message included prayers and sympathy for his family and friends.

A Legacy of Service and Leadership

Before becoming cacique, Sierra held multiple roles within the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. He previously served as the pueblo’s governor, alguacil (tribal sheriff), tribal judge, and mayordomo. His career was marked by a commitment to public service and the well-being of his people.

Sierra’s contributions extended beyond his official duties. In 2023, he celebrated his 80th birthday with a performance by rock 'n' roll legend Chubby Checker and a surprise appearance by Chiquis singing "Happy Birthday." This event was captured on the Speaking Rock Facebook page, showcasing the community's affection for him.

Cultural and Historical Contributions

One of Sierra’s notable achievements was leading a delegation to the Netherlands for the repatriation of sacred artifacts that had been taken by Dutch anthropologist Herman F.C. Ten Kate in 1882. These items were returned in January 2025, marking a significant moment in cultural preservation.

In addition to his roles within the tribe, Sierra was a photographer and worked as a film location scout for several movies shot in El Paso, including the 1983 Chuck Norris action movie "Lone Wolf McQuade." He retired from the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau, now known as Destination El Paso, after a 30-year career.

A Lasting Impact

José Sierra Sr.'s life and work left an indelible mark on the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and the broader El Paso community. His leadership, dedication, and contributions will be remembered and honored for years to come. As the community mourns, they also celebrate the life of a man who dedicated himself to serving others and preserving the heritage of his people.
