Three Killed, Three Injured in Reno Casino Shooting, Authorities Report

Tragedy Strikes Reno: Multiple Injuries and Fatalities in Resort Shooting
A tragic incident unfolded on a Monday morning at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada, leaving three people dead and six others injured. The Reno Police Department confirmed the details of the shooting, which began at 7:25 a.m. when a white man entered the resort’s parking lot from the north side and made his way toward the valet area.
Once there, the individual pulled out a handgun and aimed it at a group of people. According to a news release, the weapon initially malfunctioned but was later fixed, allowing the man to open fire and strike five individuals. He then ran back through the parking lot, where he fired on a casino security officer who returned fire before the suspect fled and shot a sixth person inside a vehicle. That individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reno police officers arrived at the scene within two and a half minutes of the initial call, as stated by Chief Kathryn Nance during a press conference. The suspect allegedly fired at officers, striking a patrol vehicle before being shot by multiple officers and taken into custody. He remains hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities reported that the man was carrying multiple firearm magazines.
During the incident, one Reno police officer sustained minor injuries, reportedly from glass fragments, but was not shot. No other law enforcement personnel were injured.
As of Monday afternoon, four of the injured individuals were taken to the hospital. Three people had died, while two remained in critical condition and one had been released. The northwest parking lot of the Grand Sierra Resort remains closed as investigators process the scene, though the casino itself is open and accessible through other entrances.
Chief Nance expressed her deepest condolences to the victims and their families, as well as the entire community. She emphasized that tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure, not just for the victims, first responders, and those present, but for everyone who calls Reno home.
She also reiterated that violence is unacceptable, especially in public spaces, and that everyone has a right to safety. “The suspect is to blame for his actions and is responsible for the tragedies he created,” she said.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect's identity or a motive. As of Monday evening, there is no known connection between the shooter and the people injured. The Sparks Police Department is leading the investigation into both the original shooting and the use of firearms by police at the scene, with assistance from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges communities face in ensuring public safety and responding to acts of violence. It also underscores the importance of continued efforts to address the root causes of such incidents and support those affected by them.
As the investigation continues, the Reno community is coming together to mourn the loss of life and support those impacted by this tragedy. Local leaders are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, while also emphasizing the need for compassion and unity in the face of such adversity.
