This Humble Crossover Is Challenging Ford's F-150 Dominance

The Unlikely Challenge to Ford's Dominance
Stories about underdogs overcoming giants are a staple of American culture, often seen in classic '80s films where plucky characters take down powerful adversaries. However, when it comes to the automotive industry, the narrative is shifting. For decades, the Ford F-150 has been the king of pickup trucks, dominating sales and setting the standard for performance and utility. But now, there's talk that this long-reigning champion might be facing a serious challenge from an unexpected source.
While many might think of the Tesla Cybertruck as the potential disruptor, the reality is that the Ford F-150 Lightning still outsells it by a significant margin. Instead, the real contender is the Toyota RAV4, a compact SUV that has been around since the late '90s and was even featured in a memorable ad with the punk rock anthem "What Do I Get?" by Buzzcocks.
According to data from JATO Dynamics, a leading automotive analytics firm, Ford sold 460,915 F-150s in 2024, while the RAV4 sold 475,193 units. However, this figure doesn't include the larger F-250 through F-600 models. When these are factored in, Ford's total F-Series sales jump significantly. Mike Levine, Ford's North America product communications director, explained that all F-Series trucks share a common cab architecture, which means they should be counted together.
When considering the full range of Ford's F-Series, including the F-250 to F-600, the number exceeds 732,000 units. Adding in heavy trucks like the F-650 and F-750, the total climbs even higher. This shows that Ford's dominance in the truck market remains strong, despite the competition from other models.
A Closer Look at Sales Figures
To get a more accurate comparison, it's important to consider other models in Ford's lineup. The Ford Maverick and Ranger, for example, have become popular alternatives to the F-150. These vehicles offer similar capabilities but at a more affordable price point. The cheapest F-150 today costs $8,000 more than it did in 2021, while the 2024 Maverick starts around $24,000 and the Ranger starts just under $33,000.
Despite a 5% drop in F-150 sales from 2023 to 2024, the Maverick and Ranger saw significant growth. In 2023, they sold 126,392 units in the U.S., but that number increased to 177,347 in 2024. Combined with the F-Series, the total sales reached 909,486 units, and adding in the heavy trucks brought the total to 923,157.
The RAV4, on the other hand, had a base suggested price of around $30,000 in 2024. Considering the impact of inflation and the current economic climate, the comparison between the RAV4 and the F-150 isn't entirely fair. The RAV4's success in a challenging economy is not surprising, given its affordability and practicality.
Ford's Truck Lineup vs. Toyota's SUVs
Looking at the broader picture, Toyota's SUV and crossover lineup, which includes the RAV4, bZ4X, Highlander, Grand Highlander, Corolla Cross, 4Runner, Venza, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser, sold a total of 927,611 units in 2024. This number includes the discontinued Venza, which contributed about 32,000 units.
In comparison, Ford's truck lineup alone is nearly as large as Toyota's entire SUV and crossover lineup. This suggests that the F-Series still holds a strong position in the market, particularly in situations where utility and power are essential.
Is the RAV4 a True Threat?
While the RAV4 has certainly performed well, it's important to note that Ford's F-Series is still ahead by about 250,000 units in yearly sales. This gap is significant and highlights the continued dominance of Ford's truck lineup. Even in 2025, the F-Series has already sold 412,858 units compared to the RAV4's 239,451.
The RAV4's success is impressive, especially with upcoming models like the 2026 hybrid-only RAV4 with its 320-hp PHEV Sport Version. However, the F-Series remains the top-selling truck in the U.S., and its position on the throne seems secure for now. The competition may continue to evolve, but for now, Ford's dominance in the pickup truck market is still unchallenged.
