Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore, emphasized the importance of this new phase for Marvel, highlighting that it builds on the success of "Thunderbolts" and demonstrates that audiences are still eager to support superhero films in theaters. He noted that this momentum could be crucial for the brand moving forward.

Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, described "The Fantastic Four" as a "zero-homework-required" release, meaning it operates independently from the established Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storylines. This approach is seen as vital for Marvel, as it aims to both retain die-hard fans and attract more casual viewers who may have drifted away due to the sheer volume of MCU releases.

Despite the ongoing debate about "superhero fatigue," Daniel Loria, editorial director at BoxOffice Pro, pointed to another challenge—franchise fatigue. Since the release of "Iron Man" in 2008, Marvel Studios has produced 37 films, including four "Avengers" movies between 2012 and 2019, which collectively grossed approximately $10 billion when adjusted for inflation. The proliferation of these films has led to a sense of saturation among some audiences.

Dergarabedian also noted that the release of Marvel Cinematic Universe television series on Disney's streaming platform has complicated the franchise's trajectory. While some Marvel films, such as "Deadpool & Wolverine" in 2024 and "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in 2021, have performed well, many others have struggled to make a strong opening. Loria suggested that "The Fantastic Four" offers a fresh experience that stands apart from the home-viewing convenience of streaming services.

The success of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" is especially meaningful given the underperformance of the 2015 "Fantastic Four" film, which only earned $76.3 million domestically after adjusting for inflation. This new entry is expected to help revive the franchise and restore confidence in its potential.

Warner Bros. Pictures' "Superman" secured the second position at the domestic box office, earning nearly $25 million during the weekend. As part of the revitalized DC movie universe, "Superman" has accumulated $289.5 million since its July 11 premiere. Dergarabedian highlighted that the success of both "Superman" and "The Fantastic Four" underscores the enduring appeal of the superhero genre, noting that its disappearance would be a major blow to the industry.

Universal Pictures' "Jurassic World Rebirth" took third place, generating $13 million in its fourth week of release. The film has now earned $301.51 million domestically. Robbins observed that there have been few instances where DC and Marvel films have competed directly in theaters, suggesting that casual comic book fans might choose to see both films if they find them appealing.

Loria pointed to the diverse range of films currently available as a key factor in sustaining moviegoing momentum. In addition to the superhero offerings, Paramount Pictures' comedy "The Naked Gun" will soon open, providing a new genre alternative for audiences.

Industry Outlook

According to Comscore data, the box office has seen a 12.3% increase year-to-date compared to the same period last year. Dergarabedian expressed optimism that the summer box office could reach $4 billion, marking the second post-pandemic summer to achieve this milestone. He praised "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" for setting the stage for a strong August, calling it a positive sign for the industry's future.
