In recent months, Tesla has been working hard to regain its footing in the Chinese market. However, a new entry from Dongfeng, one of China’s major state-owned automakers, is making waves with its impressive hybrid SUV, the M-Hero M817. This vehicle has already secured nearly 10,000 pre-orders within just 24 hours of its announcement, showcasing strong consumer interest.
The M817 is designed as an alternative to Tesla’s offerings, presenting a unique value proposition that combines performance, versatility, and affordability. One of the key features that sets it apart is its off-road capability, which fills a gap that Tesla cannot currently address in China due to the absence of the Cybertruck in the local market. With a starting price of 329,000 yuan (approximately $45,854), the M817 offers drivers a compelling mix of power and practicality without breaking the bank.
Performance and Technology Features
Under the hood, the M817 boasts a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors, delivering an impressive 912 horsepower and 944 lb-ft of torque. This combination allows the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds. The hybrid system also provides a substantial all-electric range of 124 miles, making it a viable option for both city driving and longer trips.
One of the standout technological features of the M817 is its integration of Huawei’s latest ADS 4 driving assistance system. This marks a significant milestone for China, as it represents the first commercial high-speed Level 3 autonomous solution. The system includes advanced components such as a mass-produced high-precision solid-state LiDAR, an in-cabin laser vision sensor, and distributed millimeter-wave radar, enhancing the vehicle’s safety and convenience.

The M817 comes in two distinct exterior designs: the City Edition and the Off-Road Edition. Tesla’s Performance in China
While Dongfeng is experiencing a surge in pre-orders, Tesla has faced some challenges in the Chinese market. According to recent data, Tesla registered 9,900 vehicles in China between July 14 and 20, marking a nearly 20% drop from the previous week and a 5.7% decrease compared to the same period last year. In contrast, Tesla’s sales three weeks into Q3 last year saw an over 70% year-over-year increase. Although there was a slight recovery after a low point in early July, Tesla’s total sales from January 1 to July 20 are down 4.8% year-over-year, with a total of 291,300 vehicle deliveries.
