A Mother’s Desperate Search for Her Missing Son
Giovanni Pelletier, an 18-year-old from North Carolina, has been missing since August 1st after a trip to Florida that was meant to reconnect him with his biological father's family. His mother, Bridgette Pelletier, says the events surrounding his disappearance are deeply troubling and have left her heartbroken.
Giovanni had been looking forward to this trip for months. After turning 18 in April, he expressed a strong desire to meet his paternal relatives in Florida, where he was born and lived until around age four before moving with his mother to North Carolina. Bridgette, who is of Italian and Puerto Rican heritage, supports her son’s quest for identity and connection. She believes it was important for Giovanni to learn more about his roots, especially since she couldn’t provide that background herself.
The family traveled to Florida in late July to visit a relative undergoing chemotherapy. During the trip, Giovanni joined a text group chat with some of his paternal cousins and arranged for them to pick him up from their hotel in Englewood, Florida. Bridgette had reservations about him going alone, but she trusted her son completely.
On the night of August 1st, Giovanni was picked up by his cousins around 1:30 a.m. local time. His fiancé, Jeremy Brown, saw him off, while Bridgette was asleep, studying for her pharmacy board exam. Within 30 minutes, Giovanni sent two messages to his mother, including one that read, “Mom help.” He then called her at 1:56 a.m. and FaceTimed her a minute later, asking for help when he couldn't reach her.
Bridgette didn’t see these missed calls and texts until around 6:20 a.m. on Friday. She also noticed a missed call from one of the cousins who had been with Giovanni. The call came nearly an hour after he was picked up, and she says no further communication followed.
The situation became even more alarming when Giovanni’s paternal grandfather reached out to her. He claimed there had been an altercation between the young men, and that the cousins had left Giovanni on the side of the road in Bradenton, Manatee County. Bridgette tried to reach Giovanni and used the GPS on his phone to track his location. When she arrived at the location, she found his bag left on the roadside, along with his phone and backpack. She says this is highly unusual because Giovanni never leaves his phone behind.
Later, Bridgette spoke with one of the cousins who had called her overnight. He told her that the group had smoked marijuana with Giovanni after picking him up, and that he began to panic. The cousin claimed Giovanni cursed at him, leading to a confrontation on the side of the road during which Giovanni allegedly pulled out a knife. According to the cousin, they wrestled the knife away from him, and Giovanni ran off.
However, this account conflicts with the statement released by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. They said that Giovanni had been traveling north on I-75 with his cousins when he suddenly began acting erratically and exited the vehicle near SR70 in Manatee County. The sheriff’s office is working with law enforcement in Brevard County, but has not responded to requests for comment.
Bridgette is frustrated by what she sees as a lack of support from both the family and law enforcement. She feels the response would be different if Giovanni were younger. As the eldest of her five children, she describes him as a kind-hearted and protective individual who always looked out for others, including his younger brother with autism.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Giovanni’s whereabouts or an arrest and conviction. A GoFundMe has also been launched to aid in the search efforts.
Bridgette says she knows something is wrong because her son knows her number by heart. She believes he wouldn’t run away and send a message like “help me” unless he truly needed assistance. She says she would do anything to find him, even if it meant burning the world down. However, she feels helpless now, with no direction or leads to follow.
Her story is a heartbreaking reminder of the uncertainty and fear that come with a child going missing. As the search continues, Bridgette remains determined to find her son and bring closure to this painful chapter in their lives.
