This partnership aims to leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud computing technologies to address one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time—cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) and removing 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040.

The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organization dedicated to ridding the world’s oceans and rivers of plastic pollution. Its mission is not only to clean up existing debris but also to prevent future pollution by addressing the root causes of plastic waste. AWS, as a leader in cloud computing, brings its advanced technological capabilities to this initiative, helping The Ocean Cleanup accelerate its efforts and scale its impact.

Recent studies have shown that the GPGP, which is estimated to be twice the size of France, is not just an eyesore—it poses serious threats to marine life and the planet’s climate systems. The accumulation of plastic in the ocean hinders the natural ability of the sea to regulate global temperatures and disrupts ecosystems. To date, The Ocean Cleanup has already removed over 29 million kilograms of marine trash from the oceans. Initially, the system will target the GPGP, where plastic is distributed unevenly like a thin layer across the water’s surface. AWS will provide a range of technologies, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices, satellite imagery, edge computing, drones, and ruggedized flotation devices to monitor and map plastic concentrations accurately.

By utilizing high-performance computing for advanced data modeling, AWS will support the development of a “plastic navigation” system. This system will predict the movement of debris and guide cleanup operations to the most efficient collection points. The solution will integrate data from various sources, including open data platforms and The Ocean Cleanup’s own models, allowing ships to be directed toward areas with the highest concentration of plastic in near-real-time.

Implementing a Cloud-Based Infrastructure for Marine Life Protection

Another critical focus of the collaboration is improving the protection of marine life during cleanup operations. AWS will help develop AI-driven technologies that enhance the ability to detect and avoid sensitive species. This advancement will reduce the need for human observers who monitor cleanup activities around the clock, lowering costs and freeing up resources for more plastic removal efforts.

Dr. Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon.com, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating that technology can play a vital role in addressing environmental challenges. He noted that cloud computing and AI can transform raw data into actionable insights, creating a blueprint for global environmental solutions.

Boyan Slat, CEO and founder of The Ocean Cleanup, expressed his optimism about the potential of this partnership. He believes that AWS’s technology will allow the organization to better locate plastic hotspots, optimize cleanup operations, and protect marine ecosystems while working toward its goal of reducing global ocean plastic pollution by 90%.

The success of this initiative will be measured by the amount of plastic removed from the oceans and rivers.
