Upcoming Changes to Imjin Parkway: Roundabouts and Construction Updates

The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) has announced that roundabouts are set to be introduced on Imjin Parkway as part of the ongoing Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project. This project aims to enhance safety and traffic flow along a key corridor serving approximately 30,000 daily motorists traveling between the Salinas area and the Monterey Peninsula.

Starting August 22, Imjin Parkway and all roundabouts will be open in a single-lane configuration. This temporary setup is designed to provide drivers with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with navigating the roundabouts before the final two-lane configuration is implemented. TAMC has also provided a video guide on its website explaining how to drive through roundabouts, which can be accessed at https://www.imjinparkway.com/why-roundabouts/#traffic.

The project spans 1.7 miles of Imjin Parkway, from Reservation Road to Imjin Road. It includes the construction of four roundabouts and the expansion of the roadway to four lanes. The project is expected to be completed by June 2026.

Ongoing Construction and Adjustments

Construction on the project continues, with specific adjustments made to avoid conflicts with the Classic Car Week event, which runs from August 7 to 17. As a result, night work has been rescheduled to August 21. During this time, crews will perform striping along the length of Imjin Parkway and relocate concrete barrier rails and delineators to transition traffic to single-lane roundabouts at all intersections. On August 22, the parkway and all roundabouts will officially open in a single-lane configuration.

From now until August 8, day shift work will focus on completing final grading for subgrade material from Abrams Drive on the southside of Imjin Parkway to Reservation Road, alongside other related tasks. Paving is scheduled for the week of August 4.

Upcoming work will involve coordination with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) at Abrams Drive. PG&E plans to relocate some equipment that conflicts with the project’s construction and will also implement improvements to its system in the area. This work is currently influencing TAMC’s schedule for the completion of Abrams Drive.

Access and Safety Measures

The Christina Williams Memorial access is restricted and requires an escort. Those needing access should contact Conner Schivo at Monterey Peninsula Engineering via phone at (831) 277-0137 or email at conner@MPE2000. Alternatively, they can reach out to the city of Marina at mmowery@cityofmarina.org.

Drivers should be aware of the enforceable speed limit of 25 mph within the construction zone. Additionally, the recommended speed limit through roundabouts during construction is 15 mph.

Phases of the Project

The Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project is divided into several phases. Phase two, which began in early March, involves traffic moving on the newly constructed north side of the parkway while work focuses on the south side. Once phase two is complete, phase three will include miscellaneous roadwork such as demolishing temporary paving, roadway paving, temporary striping, drainage utilities, lighting, and grading.

Phase four will involve final paving—top lift—and striping. Upon completion, the project will add on-street buffered bike lanes, stormwater treatment areas, retaining walls, and a sound wall.

Community Benefits and Funding

The improvements are intended to benefit both commuters and residents living along Imjin Parkway near Cal State Monterey Bay and the neighboring neighborhoods of Marina Heights, Sea Haven, and Preston Park.

The city of Marina serves as the lead agency for the project, which is the second regional TAMC Measure X project to be built. Measure X, approved by 67.7% of Monterey County voters in November 2016, funds the Transportation Agency’s Transportation Safety and Investment Plan.

The project is funded with $40.5 million, including $2 million from Marina generated through development impact fees, around $18.2 million from TAMC’s Measure X, and approximately $20.2 million from California’s SB1 local partnership program.
