Ohio State Fair Implements New Safety Measures for Minors

The Ohio State Fair has introduced a new policy that prohibits minors under the age of 18 from entering the fair after 6 p.m. without a supervising adult who is at least 21 years old. This rule, which marks the second consecutive year the fair has implemented such a measure, was put in place following positive results from last year’s initiative.

Adam Heffron, the Ohio State Fair Executive Director, emphasized that the decision was made with safety and security as top priorities. “We are proactive about safety and security; it’s our focus,” Heffron stated. “The policy is pretty simple. After 6 p.m. each day of the fair, if you are under the age of 18, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian that is 21 years of age or older.”

Starting at 6 p.m., security personnel will check for valid identification at all entrances to ensure compliance with the new rule. Heffron explained that while the fair itself did not experience any incidents, the policy was a response to broader concerns across the country. “It was really a proactive response to what was happening in the marketplace around us in the amusement parks, malls, other fairs, and events, really, throughout the country,” he said. “So we took the lesson that they’ve learned, maybe the hard way, but we became proactive.”

Increased Law Enforcement Presence

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is also playing a key role in enforcing the new rules. Sgt. Brice Nihiser, a representative from the patrol, mentioned that there will be a significant number of troopers on the fairgrounds this year. Some will be patrolling the area, while others will be stationed at fixed posts.

“If we see an issue at the state fair, obviously we’re going to address it,” Nihiser said. “If we find that there’s somebody who, you know, is under the age of 18 that is causing an issue, we’re going to deal with that issue as it arises.”

Nihiser also highlighted the importance of reporting any suspicious activity. “If you see something here at the fair that you know is wrong, if you think that something is wrong, find a state trooper.” In addition, the highway patrol has set up several lost child booths throughout the fairgrounds. They recommend taking a photo of your child upon arrival so that officials can quickly identify them if they become separated.

Additional Safety Tips for Attendees

For those planning to attend the fair, Nihiser offered some additional safety tips. He advised visitors to lock their car doors and keep valuables out of sight when parking. “That’s going to go a long way to prevent someone from targeting your vehicle,” he said.

In case of emergencies in the parking lot or around the fairgrounds, attendees are encouraged to call 911. For first aid, they should contact 614-644-4466.

New Rules for Masks and Supervision

Another new rule introduced this year is the prohibition of masks or face coverings inside the fairgrounds. Heffron explained that this decision was made to ensure visibility and enhance safety for all attendees.

Additionally, each supervising adult is limited to accompanying only six minors. “Everyone’s welcome, they truly are, but after 6, just bring a parent or guardian with you if you’re under the age of 18,” Heffron said.

The Ohio State Fair continues to emphasize that these measures are not meant to restrict fun but rather to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors. By implementing these policies, organizers aim to prevent disruptions caused by inappropriate behavior and ensure that everyone can enjoy the fair without unnecessary risks.
