Student Among 3 Teens Shot in Carpentersville Sought Help in Algonquin

Overview of the Incident

A tragic shooting occurred in Carpentersville, Illinois, involving three teenagers who were shot and later found seeking medical attention in Algonquin. School officials have confirmed that at least one of the victims is a student at Barrington High School, and the school community has begun offering support to the affected family.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening when four individuals were seated in a car parked in a driveway in the 1200 block of Navajo Drive. Among them were a 17-year-old boy, an 18-year-old man, and two 19-year-old men. Two suspects, identified as Rafael Ruiz, Jr., a 21-year-old from Aurora, and a 17-year-old from Carpentersville, approached the group. A confrontation led to gunfire, resulting in three of the four people being shot.

After the shooting, both suspects fled the scene, along with the victims’ vehicle. The driver attempted to reach a local hospital while someone inside called 911. Carpentersville police located the car just north of the intersection of Randall Road and Broadsmore Drive in Algonquin around 11:30 p.m. Officers provided immediate lifesaving measures, which allowed all three victims to be transported to area hospitals.

Medical Response and Recovery

The Carpentersville Fire Department arrived on the scene and requested three ambulances. Two of the victims were each shot once, while the third suffered multiple gunshot wounds. As of Friday, two of the victims had been released from the hospital, while the third remained hospitalized. Police officials did not provide updates on the condition of the victim on Saturday.

Barrington 220 Community Unit School District Superintendent Craig Winkelman and Barrington High School Principal Steve McWilliams confirmed that the last remaining victim in the hospital is a current student at Barrington High School. They also noted that they were unsure whether the other two victims were also students at the same school.

The shooting took place in the Sunny Hill Elementary School neighborhood. School officials stated that they have been in contact with the family and that the student is receiving medical care and is in stable condition. They added that they will continue to offer support and assistance to the student and their family during this difficult time.

Traffic Disruptions and Police Actions

Following the incident, the Algonquin Police Department shut down Randall Road in both directions between Longmeadow Parkway and Broadsmore Drive. Motorists were advised to avoid the area. Both directions of Randall Road were eventually reopened around 1:30 a.m., with one northbound lane remaining closed until approximately 4:30 a.m.

Carpentersville police detectives were actively investigating the case and following several leads. Deputy Police Chief Kevin Stankowitz emphasized that based on the information gathered so far, the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Carpentersville Police Department commended the responding officers, dispatchers, and medical personnel for their quick response and professionalism, which helped save lives. They expressed their condolences to the victims and their families and reaffirmed their commitment to seeking justice.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the 1500 block of Pawnee Road in Carpentersville on Friday. Both suspects, Ruiz and the juvenile, were taken into custody during the operation. At the time of his arrest, Ruiz had five outstanding warrants. He was charged with one count of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, and one count of possession of a firearm by a street gang member.
