Strong Quake Hits Near Russia, Tsunami Warnings Across Pacific

Major Earthquake Hits Kamchatka Peninsula, Triggering Warnings Across the Pacific
A powerful earthquake struck near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday morning, sending shockwaves across the Pacific region and prompting widespread tsunami warnings. The event has led to emergency measures being taken in several countries, including the United States, Japan, and parts of South America.
The quake occurred around 8:25 a.m. Japanese time, with the Japan Meteorological Agency reporting an 8.7-magnitude tremor and the U.S. Geological Survey estimating it at 8.8. The epicenter was located approximately 74 miles east-southeast of Petropavlovsk on the Kamchatka Peninsula, at a depth of 12.8 miles. If confirmed, this would be one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded and the most significant since the 9.1-magnitude event in Japan in 2011, which caused devastating damage and loss of life.
Warnings Issued for U.S. West Coast and Hawaii
In response to the potential threat, tsunami warnings were issued for Hawaii, Alaska’s Samalga Pass, and California’s west coast from Cape Mendocino to the Oregon-California border. Advisories also extended to much of the U.S. and Canadian West Coasts. According to the National Weather Service, the tsunami could cause damage along all Hawaiian islands, urging urgent action to protect lives and property.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green addressed the situation during a press conference, stating that while no significant wave activity had been observed yet, residents should remain cautious. He emphasized that the state is not yet in the clear and warned that destructive waves could hit Honolulu by 7:17 p.m. HST. Green has activated the U.S. National Guard and authorized emergency services to take necessary safety actions.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center forecasted waves of up to 10 feet above tide level hitting northern Hawaii islands. Meanwhile, the Hawaii Department of Transportation ordered all vessels to follow procedures to leave port for all islands.
Evacuations and Precautions in California and Beyond
In California, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office confirmed they have been briefed on the situation, urging residents to stay alert and follow local emergency guidance. Officials have closed beaches, harbors, and piers in Huntington Beach, though no evacuations have been ordered yet.
For Samalga Pass, authorities warned that "significant inundation is possible or is already occurring." U.S. President Donald Trump encouraged residents to "stay strong and stay safe" through a statement on his Truth Social platform.
Japan Responds to Potential Tsunami Threat
Japan's Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings for areas from northeastern Hokkaido to Wakayama Prefecture, with waves potentially reaching 3 meters (nearly 9 feet). Evacuation orders were issued for 112 cities and towns, affecting over 1.9 million people. TEPCO, the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, reported that all workers at the decommissioned facility have been evacuated.
The Japanese government established a prime minister's liaison office to coordinate the response to the earthquake and tsunami. Additionally, Japan Safe Travel warned that tsunamis of 1 to 3 meters are expected between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. local time.
Impact in Russia and Other Regions
Russia's emergencies ministry reported that tsunami waves have already hit its far east coast, flooding the port town of Severo-Kurilsk and the Alaid fish processing plant. Residents were evacuated, and officials confirmed that those in the settlement remain safe on higher ground until the threat subsides.
In Kamchatka, responders are inspecting buildings, with reports of a kindergarten facade collapsing during renovations. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also warned of waves up to 10 feet hitting parts of Russia and Ecuador.
Regional Warnings Extend to South and Central America
In Mexico and Central America, the Integrated Tsunami Alert System issued a warning from Ensenada to Panama, forecasting waves of up to 3 feet. Authorities urged coastal communities to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols.
As the situation continues to unfold, governments and emergency services across the Pacific region are working to ensure public safety and mitigate the impact of the potential tsunami.
