Starmer and European Leaders Join Zelensky in Washington for Key Talks

European Leaders Prepare to Support Ukraine in Crucial Meeting with Trump
European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, are set to meet with former US President Donald Trump at the White House. This high-profile gathering aims to present a unified stance on supporting Ukraine and addressing the ongoing conflict with Russia. The meeting is expected to focus on ensuring that Ukraine does not have to cede territory to Russia as part of any peace agreement.
Sir Keir will be joined by several other key political figures, such as French President Emmanuel Macron, German politician Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Additionally, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will also attend the meeting. Their collective presence underscores the importance of maintaining a strong, coordinated response to the crisis.
Zelensky's Position and Potential Demands from Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is anticipated to face pressure from Trump to accept Russian control over Donetsk and Luhansk, two regions rich in natural resources and currently under Russian occupation. In exchange, Putin might agree to withdraw his forces from other parts of Ukraine and provide a guarantee similar to NATO’s commitment to protect the country from future aggression.
Despite these potential demands, European leaders have emphasized that the decision on how to end the war must rest with Ukraine. They have praised Zelensky for his dedication to achieving a "just and lasting" peace. However, there are concerns about the implications of Trump’s approach, especially after he reportedly shifted his stance on a ceasefire following a recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump's Approach and Possible Outcomes
Trump has moved away from advocating for an immediate ceasefire, instead focusing on securing a long-term peace deal. However, his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has indicated that such a deal remains distant. While there may be additional consequences for Russia if it refuses to negotiate, fresh financial sanctions are unlikely to prompt Putin to the table.
Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, suggested that both a ceasefire and a peace deal would serve the same purpose: to halt the violence. Zelensky echoed this sentiment, stating that negotiations cannot occur under the threat of continued attacks. He emphasized the need for a ceasefire to enable swift progress toward a final agreement.
Security Guarantees and Coalition Efforts
European leaders are also keen to hear more about Trump’s plans for a security guarantee for Ukraine. A coalition of nations has been formed to deter future Russian aggression once peace is established. This coalition requires American support, likely in the form of air assistance, to be effective.
During a recent meeting of the coalition, Sir Keir expressed appreciation for Zelensky’s commitment to a fair and enduring peace. The coalition reaffirmed its support for Ukraine, with No 10 highlighting the importance of maintaining unity among allies.
French President Macron has also urged Trump to back plans to strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities. As the European delegation prepares for their meeting with Trump, they remain mindful of past tensions, such as the public disagreement between Zelensky and Vice President JD Vance earlier this year, which led to a temporary halt in US aid to Ukraine.
This meeting represents a critical opportunity for European leaders to reinforce their solidarity with Ukraine and ensure that any peace agreement reflects the country's interests and sovereignty.
