Starmer and EU Allies Head to US for Zelensky's Trump Showdown

European Leaders Gather in Washington for Key Talks with Trump on Ukraine
European leaders are set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., as part of a critical dialogue on the future of Ukraine. This gathering includes UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German leader Friedrich Merz, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The meeting is intended to show solidarity with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has expressed a desire for a “just and lasting peace” amid ongoing conflict.
This coalition of leaders aims to support Zelensky’s vision while navigating complex discussions about the potential terms of a peace agreement. Recent reports suggest that Trump may be considering proposals that could involve territorial concessions from Ukraine. Specifically, Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly seeking full control over Donetsk and Luhansk as a condition for ending the war. In exchange, he might agree to relinquish other territories currently under Russian occupation.
The talks have sparked concern among European leaders, who are determined to ensure that Ukraine retains its sovereignty and territorial integrity. During a recent meeting of the coalition, a spokesperson for Downing Street emphasized the group's commitment to supporting security guarantees for Ukraine. They also reiterated their readiness to deploy a reassurance force once hostilities cease to help secure Ukraine’s skies and seas.
Ursula von der Leyen, the EU Commission president, highlighted the importance of maintaining Ukraine’s borders as they are, stating that international borders should not be altered through force. She emphasized that any decisions regarding Ukraine’s territory must be made by Ukraine itself and not imposed by external powers. Von der Leyen also noted that both a ceasefire and a full peace agreement could potentially stop the violence, focusing more on the content of any agreement rather than the specific terminology used.
Zelensky echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for concrete steps toward lasting peace rather than a temporary pause in the conflict. He criticized Russia for refusing to consider a ceasefire, which complicates the situation further. Zelensky acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed hope that collective efforts could lead to a peaceful coexistence between nations.
European leaders have also urged Trump not to compromise on key issues, emphasizing that no limitations should be placed on Ukraine’s military capabilities or its partnerships with third countries. They reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s path toward joining the EU and NATO, highlighting the coalition’s readiness to play an active role in the peace process.
Despite the lack of a formal deal during early morning negotiations, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Trump’s efforts in bringing the world closer to ending Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine. Trump, however, remained vague about the specifics of the discussions, mentioning “some great progress” but offering little detail. Meanwhile, Putin described the negotiations as constructive and suggested the possibility of another meeting in Moscow, raising concerns about potential compromises.
As the discussions continue, the focus remains on ensuring that Ukraine’s interests are protected and that any peace agreement reflects the country’s sovereignty and security needs. The upcoming talks in Washington represent a crucial step in shaping the future of the region and addressing the ongoing conflict.
