Star Wars Returns to Seattle with a Cinematic Marathon

Fans of the Star Wars universe have a reason to celebrate as the iconic franchise makes a grand return to Seattle in September. The Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) Cinema Downtown will host a two-week celebration featuring all 11 Star Wars films, offering fans an immersive experience that spans the entire cinematic saga.

The event, titled “Star Wars: The Ultimate Cinematic Marathon,” will run from September 5 through September 18, giving attendees the chance to relive the epic stories that have captivated audiences for decades. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the galaxy far, far away, this marathon is a must-see for anyone who loves the magic of Star Wars.

A Journey Through Time and Space

The marathon will be divided into two distinct weekends, each offering a different perspective on the Star Wars saga. The first weekend, starting on September 5, will showcase the films in chronological order, taking viewers from Anakin Skywalker’s early days as a podracer in The Phantom Menace to Rey’s final rise in The Rise of Skywalker. This unique approach allows fans to experience the story as it was originally intended, following the timeline of events within the Star Wars universe.

The second weekend will feature the films in the order they were released to the public, allowing fans to relive the original trilogy’s magic and the shocking reveals that defined the series’ early years. This format offers a nostalgic trip back to when the first three films were introduced to the world, capturing the excitement and wonder of the original releases.

A Historic Venue with a Rich Legacy

SIFF Cinema Downtown, formerly known as Cinerama, has a long history of hosting major film events. Originally opened in 1963, just a year after Seattle hosted the World’s Fair, the theater was saved from closure by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 1988. After a multi-million-dollar renovation, it reopened in 1999 as a high-tech movie destination.

The venue has been a hub for Star Wars premieres and special events in the past, including a full-day screening of the seven films at the time in 2015. In 2023, SIFF acquired the theater from Allen’s estate and reopened it after it was closed during the pandemic. The name change marked a new chapter for the historic venue, which continues to serve as a cultural landmark in Seattle.

Tickets for the “Star Wars: The Ultimate Cinematic Marathon” are now available for purchase. The cost per film is $22, with discounts available for SIFF members ($19), seniors and students ($21), and children ($17).
