Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Unveils a Brilliant Spinoff for Kirk

Paul Wesley’s Journey as James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Actor Paul Wesley is widely recognized for his role as Stefan Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries. However, since the first season of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, he has taken on a new and exciting challenge—portraying James T. Kirk. In this series, Wesley’s version of Kirk is not yet the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise; that role belongs to Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike. Despite this, the showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers have expressed a strong desire to explore Kirk’s journey in a potential spinoff.
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldsman and Myers confirmed their interest in continuing the story of Kirk’s first year as captain of the Enterprise. Myers described it as “100 percent” a dream to create a sequel to Strange New Worlds that follows Wesley’s Kirk during this pivotal time. However, they have not had any formal discussions about the idea yet.
“We would be thrilled to continue telling the stories of how Pike’s crew transitions to Kirk’s crew and how Kirk’s crew sets off,” Myers said. He added that when the team reaches the original Star Trek series (TOS), it won’t be the first day of Kirk’s job. Instead, it will explore the relationships that already exist and how they developed. The opportunity to delve into characters like Sulu and McCoy, and even provide longer arcs for them, is something the team is excited about.
Potential Spinoff and Character Fates
A post-Strange New Worlds series raises questions about what will happen to characters like La’an Noonien-Singh (played by Christina Chong) and Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), who do not appear in any iteration of TOS. Myers mentioned that while these characters may not be part of the canonical future, there are still plans for their fates. “We have fates in store for those folks who don’t seem to appear in canon post-our show, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist at cooking,” he said.
Showrunner Akiva Goldsman encouraged fans to express their interest in a Kirk spinoff by starting a letter-writing campaign to Paramount. He suggested that if fans want a Star Trek: Year One series, they should let the studio know. “We dream it loudly. We like to say vocally that, ‘Hey, we have all of these really great sets. You guys own them. You make money off of them,’” Myers said. However, he emphasized that the team must first “stick the landing” with the current series before moving forward.
Goldsman previously confirmed that the fifth and final season of Strange New Worlds, which could begin filming as early as this year, will feature James T. Kirk as the captain of the Enterprise. “We will take the show to Kirk’s first day of command—which is, by the way, not actually The Original Series,” Goldsman said. He explained that the original series starts a bit into Kirk’s command, referencing episodes like “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” which is not Kirk’s first mission nor does it feel like his second.
Looking Ahead
As the series continues to build momentum, fans are eager to see where the story of Kirk’s journey will go next. With the potential for a spinoff, the possibilities for exploring the Enterprise’s history and introducing new characters are endless. For now, the focus remains on delivering a compelling narrative that honors the legacy of Star Trek while expanding its universe in exciting new ways.
