St. George Pilot's Emotional Plane Surprise for Grandmother

A Heartwarming Flight: A Grandson's Surprise for His Grandmother
In a small town in southern Utah, a touching story unfolded that left passengers on a flight in tears. It all began when airline captain Justin Shurtz wanted to create an unforgettable memory for his grandmother, who was visiting him for the first time. With the support of American Airlines, he found a way to turn a routine flight into a moment that would be cherished by everyone involved.
Justin had a plan. He wanted to surprise his grandmother, Carolyn, during her final leg of the trip into Las Vegas. However, getting on her flight wasn’t as simple as it sounds. He reached out to the crew operating the flight and asked for their help. After some coordination, he managed to switch flights with the original crew.
Meanwhile, Carolyn had no idea what was coming. She expected Justin to pick her up in Las Vegas. The thought of him being on her flight was completely unexpected. Justin remained hidden in the cockpit until the right moment arrived. When he came over the intercom to share the story of his grandparents, who had raised him in Memphis, Carolyn suddenly realized who was flying her plane.
The moment she saw him standing in the aisle, her reaction was unforgettable. “I’ll never forget the moment where she jumps out into the aisle and sees me standing there and the look on her face,” Justin said. “At that point, I got nervous, but I was extremely excited because it sunk in that this is real. This is actually happening.”
The emotional reunion touched not only Justin and Carolyn but also every passenger on board. For Carolyn, it was a moment filled with gratitude and pride. “I know how hard we struggled and how well they’re doing. You understand? And so that was my biggest thing, just how proud he made me at that moment,” she shared.
Justin credits his grandparents for everything he has achieved, including becoming a captain. “They supported me my entire life,” he said. “They supported me going through school. Everything that we did in life, they were there backing us, pushing us to be the best of our potential, be who we could be.”
Unfortunately, Justin’s grandfather passed away this year in April and never got to fly with his grandson commercially. “There was a lot of crying at first, especially when we were talking about my grandpa,” Justin said. “He got to fly with me once in a small airplane a very long time ago, when I first started flying.”
Carolyn believes her husband would have been proud of Justin. “He never would’ve left his side,” she said. “He would have been right there with him if he could have been there. He said, ‘Scoot over, I’m sitting by Justin.’ He would have been extremely, extremely, extremely pleased. Yes. And he is. He is, yes.”
This heartwarming story highlights the deep bond between family members and the impact of love and support. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of creating meaningful memories, especially during times of change and loss. Through this experience, Justin not only honored his grandmother but also celebrated the legacy of his grandfather, ensuring that their love and support continue to inspire those around them.
