New South Carolina Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards Bring Enhanced Security and State Pride

South Carolinians who are planning to renew or obtain a new driver’s license or identification card this fall will notice some significant changes. These updates, introduced by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV), aim to improve security while also celebrating the state's rich heritage.

The SCDMV recently unveiled redesigned licenses and ID cards, along with a new process for issuing them. According to the agency, these changes are designed to provide better protection against identity theft and counterfeiting, while also showcasing the natural beauty and history of South Carolina.

One of the most notable changes is the shift to a centralized card issuance process. This method, already used by 45 other states, the District of Columbia, and several federal agencies, involves producing secure credentials in certified facilities. As a result, individuals applying for a license or ID card will no longer receive their permanent card immediately at the branch office. Instead, they will be issued a temporary certificate that can be used for up to 30 days for driving, voting, and identification purposes.

The temporary certificate includes a QR code that allows users to track the status of their new card as it moves through production and mailing. The new card will be mailed within seven to 15 business days. Expired cards will be returned with a hole punch and can still be used as a photo ID until the new one arrives.

Advanced Security Features and State Symbols

The updated licenses and ID cards come with more than 40 advanced security features, including laser engraving technology. These improvements enhance durability and make it significantly harder to counterfeit the documents. The SCDMV emphasized that these changes are intended to protect citizens from becoming victims of identity fraud.

In addition to the enhanced security, the new designs incorporate elements that reflect South Carolina’s natural and cultural heritage. The cards feature images of the Statehouse, the Palmetto tree, and the crescent from the state flag. They also include tributes to the state flower, the yellow jessamine; the state bird, the Carolina wren; and the state reptile, the loggerhead sea turtle.

“These new licenses and ID cards showcase the Palmetto State while providing citizens with greater protection against becoming victims of identity fraud,” said Kevin Shwedo, Executive Director of the SCDMV. “We hope that South Carolinians will look on these new designs with pride and confidence.”

Rollout Plan and Continued Validity

The new card issuance process will begin in late August at two locations in the Midlands: Columbia (Shop Road) and Lexington. A statewide rollout is expected later in the fall. Current cardholders do not need to take any action, as all existing licenses and ID cards remain valid until their expiration dates.

The cost of the new cards remains the same as before, and the design will apply to all current types and classes of South Carolina licenses and ID cards. These will continue to be offered as both REAL ID compliant cards and Not For Federal Use (non-REAL ID compliant) cards.

Recognition for Wildlife Representation

The inclusion of native wildlife on the new ID cards has been praised for its connection to South Carolina’s natural environment. Greg Peccie, vice president of animal care at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, commented on the significance of the design.

“The inclusion of iconic native species on this reimagined SC ID serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to protect the remarkable wildlife that calls South Carolina home,” Peccie said in a statement. “Riverbanks is proud to continue collaborating in a shared commitment to the preservation of native species and the conservation of the vital habitats that sustain them.”
