South Carolina DMV Overhauls Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards

New South Carolina Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards Bring Enhanced Security and State Pride
South Carolinians who plan to renew or obtain a new driver’s license or identification card this fall can expect some significant changes. The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) has introduced new designs for licenses and ID cards, along with a revised process for issuing them. These updates are designed to improve security, protect against identity theft, and celebrate the state’s rich heritage.
The SCDMV announced that the new cards will feature over 40 advanced security features, including laser engraving technology. This innovation is intended to make the cards more durable and harder to counterfeit. Additionally, the new design incorporates elements that reflect South Carolina’s natural beauty and cultural symbols. For instance, the cards will include images of the Statehouse, the Palmetto tree, and the crescent from the state flag. They also pay tribute to the state flower, the yellow jessamine; the state bird, the Carolina wren; and the state reptile, the loggerhead sea turtle.
The agency emphasized that these changes are not just about aesthetics but also about providing better protection for residents. “These new licenses and ID cards showcase the Palmetto State while providing citizens with greater protection against becoming victims of identity fraud,” said DMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. He added that he hopes South Carolinians will feel pride and confidence in the new designs.
A Shift in the Issuance Process
One of the most notable changes is the way the SCDMV will issue licenses and ID cards. Instead of receiving the card immediately at a branch office, applicants will now be given a temporary certificate. This document will be valid for up to 30 days and can be used for driving, voting, and identification where accepted. The actual license or ID card will be mailed to the applicant within seven to 15 business days.
To track the status of their new card, individuals can use a QR code on the temporary certificate. This feature allows users to monitor the production and mailing process. Expired cards will be returned with a hole punch and can still be used as a photo ID until the new one arrives.
The transition to a centralized card issuance process involves using facilities certified for secure credential production. This method is already employed by 45 other states, the District of Columbia, and several federal agencies. The SCDV plans to begin implementing this change in late August at two locations in the Midlands: Columbia (Shop Road) and Lexington. A statewide rollout is expected later in the fall.
No Action Required for Current Cardholders
Current cardholders do not need to take any action, as all existing South Carolina licenses and ID cards remain valid until their expiration dates. The cost of the new cards will remain the same, and the design will apply to all current types and classes of licenses and ID cards. These will still be offered as both REAL ID compliant cards and Not For Federal Use (non-REAL ID compliant) cards.
The new design has also received praise for its connection to South Carolina’s native wildlife. Greg Peccie, vice president of animal care at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, highlighted the importance of featuring iconic species on the ID cards. “The inclusion of iconic native species on this reimagined SC ID serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to protect the remarkable wildlife that calls South Carolina home,” he said in a statement.
