Soldier Arrested for Espionage and Export Violations at Fort Bliss

A 22-Year-Old Soldier Arrested for Alleged Espionage Activities
A 22-year-old active-duty soldier stationed at Fort Bliss has been arrested on charges of espionage and export violations. The individual, identified as Taylor Adam Lee, was taken into custody on August 6 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) El Paso Field Office. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, Lee faces multiple serious charges, including attempted transmission of national defense information to a foreign adversary and attempted export of controlled technical data without proper authorization.
Lee, who holds a top secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information security clearance, is accused of sharing sensitive U.S. defense information with Russia's Ministry of Defense. The alleged activities span from May 2025 up to the present. During this time, Lee reportedly used his access to confidential information to send details about U.S. military operations and technology to Russian entities.
In June, Lee allegedly sent export-controlled technology information related to the M1A2 Abrams tank to an individual he believed to be associated with the Russian government. In a message, Lee claimed that the United States was not happy with him for trying to expose their weaknesses. He also stated, “At this point, I’d even volunteer to assist the Russian Federation when I’m there in any way.” These statements were reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Later in July, Lee is said to have passed an SD card containing information about the tank, another armored fighting vehicle, and combat operations to an individual he thought was a representative of the Russian government. The SD card included documents marked as Controlled Unclassified Information, which featured banner warnings and dissemination controls. During the meeting, Lee reportedly acknowledged that the information on the SD card was sensitive and likely classified.
In addition to the SD card, Lee discussed obtaining and providing the Russian government with a “specific piece of hardware to a storage unit in El Paso.” After completing this task, he sent a message to the individual stating, “mission accomplished.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized the importance of national security in its statement. Justin R. Simmons, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, noted that the Justice Department remains vigilant against those who seek to aid adversaries and harm the United States. He praised the investigative work of the FBI and the Army Counterintelligence Command, expressing confidence in the ongoing prosecution of the case.
Steven J. Jensen, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting U.S. national security. He stated that the FBI is determined to bring to justice those who attempt to undermine the country’s security.
The case is being investigated by the FBI Washington Field Office, with support from the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Command and the FBI El Paso Field Office. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover all details surrounding Lee’s alleged actions.
Fort Bliss released a statement confirming the arrest. It mentioned that Spc. Taylor Adam Lee, a tank crewman assigned to the 1st Armored Division, was taken into custody on August 6. The division pledged to continue supporting interagency partners in the ongoing case.
This incident highlights the critical nature of safeguarding national defense information and the serious consequences for those who breach their duty to protect the country. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on ensuring accountability and reinforcing measures to prevent future threats to national security.
