SNL Announces Season 51 Premiere: Impact on Cast and Hosts

Saturday Night Live Returns with New Season 51 Premiere Date
Saturday Night Live has officially announced the premiere date for its upcoming season 51. The iconic show will return to NBC on October 4, marking a slightly later start than the previous season, which began in late September. However, this date aligns with the typical schedule for past seasons. With just over two months until the big day, Lorne Michaels is expected to make several key decisions regarding the cast and potential new additions.
According to Deadline, Michaels has not yet finalized any decisions about new cast members. The first round of applications for performers was submitted before July 4, and sources indicate that Michaels is focusing on hiring "character-driven performers" rather than stand-up comedians. While this could change depending on who submits material or gets called in for auditions, it's a positive sign for the show's future. A focus on original characters could reduce the reliance on celebrity and political impressions, which have historically been a staple of the show.
Characters like Lisa from Temecula and Domingo have generated viral moments in the past, and bringing in more character-driven performers increases the likelihood of such hits happening more frequently.
Cast Changes Expected, but Not a Major Shake-Up
Sources suggest that some cast changes are expected before the season 51 premiere. However, a major shake-up similar to when eight performers left after season 47 is unlikely. Several cast members have hinted at their continued presence. Heidi Gardner, who admitted to "sketch fatigue," has indicated she plans to stay for at least another year. Bowen Yang has also pushed back against rumors that he’s leaving Studio 8H. Mikey Day has expressed his desire to stay as long as possible, and while Colin Jost and Michael Che tease their potential departure, neither has officially announced an exit.
On the other hand, some cast members may not be returning. Michael Longfellow has had limited screen time, making him a candidate for replacement. Chloe Fineman’s schedule outside of SNL has been increasingly busy, possibly signaling her readiness to move on. Featured players Emil Wakim and Jane Wickline also struggled to gain consistent momentum during season 50.
Potential Hosts for the Season 51 Premiere
No host has been named for the season 51 premiere, which is typical as the announcement usually comes closer to the start date. However, the fall movie release schedule offers some clues about potential candidates. Season 51 begins the day after The Smashing Machine hits theaters. The sports biopic features Dwayne Johnson under Benny Safdie’s direction. While the film may be a dramatic turn for Johnson, a return to SNL would be fitting.
Jared Leto leads the debut of TRON: Ares on October 10. The Oscar-winning actor could make his SNL debut, but recent allegations from earlier this year may deter Michaels from selecting him. Other actors with releases near the SNL season 51 premiere include Channing Tatum (Roofman), Ayo Edebiri, Julia Roberts, and Andrew Garfield (After the Hunt), as well as Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna (Kiss of the Spider Woman).
There is also a history of SNL reaching back into the summer to pick a host for the season premiere. Superman stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan could be options, as could Fantastic Four star Pedro Pascal.
