Shudder's $10M Horror Sensation Gets Sequel Update from Director

The Rise of "Clown in a Cornfield" and Its Future
Earlier this year, the horror film Clown in a Cornfield made waves as Shudder's latest horror hit. Starring Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, and Kevin Durand, the movie received critical acclaim, earning a Certified Fresh 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 58% rating on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Despite its modest $1 million budget, the film grossed an impressive $10 million at the box office, proving to be a financial success.
The film is based on one of Adam Cesare’s many popular novels and was written by Eli Craig and Carter Blanchard. During a recent appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Craig was asked about the possibility of a sequel based on another novel from Cesare. He acknowledged that the decision lies with AMC and Shudder but expressed his own interest in continuing the franchise:
"Let AMC reach out to me, and let Shudder make the decision if they want to do the sequel. But I think we're in a really good place if we end up doing the sequels. The books are a lot of fun, Quinn's a great character, and Rust and Cole are just great characters to follow. And seeing Frendo here, I don't know. I mean, would you want to see more Frendo?"
A Director with a Unique Vision
Eli Craig, the director of Clown in a Cornfield, made his feature debut 15 years ago with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. This R-rated buddy comedy starred Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine and is currently available on Hulu and Prime Video. Seven years later, he released Little Evil, which featured a star-studded cast including Evangeline Lilly and Adam Scott. The film is now exclusively on Netflix.
Craig has several projects in the works, including Bride and Doom and Reptile Dysfunction, though details about these films remain scarce. His unique blend of humor and horror has established him as a distinctive voice in the genre.
Availability and Current Status
While Clown in a Cornfield is not currently available on streaming platforms, it can be rented or purchased on VOD. As of now, the film is even on sale for $5.99, making it an affordable option for fans of the genre.
Kevin Durand: A Veteran in the Industry
One of the stars of Clown in a Cornfield, Kevin Durand, has built a career across major franchises. He is best known for his role as Fred Dukes, also known as The Blob, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Although Deadpool & Wolverine brought back many former Fox X-Men stars, Durand was notably absent from the cast.
Last year, Durand played the villainous Proximus Caesar in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, set long after the events of Matt Reeves’ Planet of the Apes movies. He is also set to star alongside Shawn Hatosy and Elijah Wood in Ready or Not: Here I Come, which will be released in theaters on April 10, 2026.
What’s Next for the Franchise?
With the success of Clown in a Cornfield, fans are eagerly anticipating any news about a potential sequel. While no official announcements have been made, Craig’s enthusiasm for the material and the strong fan reaction suggest that the franchise could have a bright future. Whether or not a sequel comes to fruition, the film has already made a significant impact on the horror genre.
