Overview of the Tragic Shooting Incident

A tragic shooting occurred at the Grand Sierra Resort casino in Reno, Nevada, on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals and injuries to three others. The incident took place shortly before 7:30 a.m., and officials provided updates during an afternoon press conference.

Details of the Shooting

According to Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth, the suspect initially attempted to shoot a group of bystanders in the valet area, but his gun malfunctioned. Once he managed to make the weapon operable, he fired multiple shots at the victims. Five people were initially shot, with one dying at the scene and the rest taken to a local hospital. Another individual succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, while two of the remaining three were in critical condition. The fifth victim was later released from treatment.

Following the initial shooting, the suspect continued north through the parking lot and opened fire on a casino security guard who confronted him. The security guard returned fire, prompting the suspect to move further north. He then shot a sixth victim who was driving through the parking lot, and that individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

Response by Law Enforcement

Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance reported that officers quickly responded and located the suspect on the northwest side of the property. A confrontation ensued, with both parties exchanging gunfire. The suspect was struck by gunfire and is currently hospitalized in critical condition. As of Tuesday night, authorities identified the suspect as 26-year-old Dakota Hawver of Reno.

Hawver was armed with a 9mm handgun and multiple magazines, firing approximately 80 shots. According to Sparks police, he legally purchased the gun around two years ago but recently acquired ammunition. Investigators noted that Hawver had no prior criminal history or mental health issues.

Impact on Officers and Property

At least one officer sustained minor injuries, likely from glass fragments, and at least one patrol car was hit by bullets. Despite the chaos, none of the Grand Sierra Resort’s employees were harmed.

Ventura County Supervisor Jeff Corell identified one of the victims as Andrew Canepa, a co-owner of a restaurant in Newbury Park. He described Canepa as a kind soul, dedicated business owner, and loving father. Sparks police later identified the other two deceased individuals as 23-year-old Justin Aguila, a Southern California resident, and 66-year-old Angel Martinez, a Reno-Sparks area resident. The identities of the remaining victims have not been disclosed.
