Israel's Military Expansion Plan in Gaza Sparks Concerns

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet is set to meet on Thursday to finalize a decision regarding the expansion of military operations in Gaza. This move comes despite significant concerns from senior military officers about the potential consequences of such an escalation. According to reports, the phased plan involves capturing large portions of the Gaza Strip over a period of five months, which could displace approximately one million Palestinians.

Netanyahu has emphasized that Israel must "complete" the defeat of Hamas to secure the release of hostages still held in Gaza since the October 2023 attack that initiated the conflict. The Israeli military has recently issued new displacement orders in parts of Gaza City and Khan Yunis, raising fears that the government may be preparing for a full occupation of the territory later this week. The military spokesperson mentioned that ground troops are preparing to "expand the scope of combat operations."

Inside Israel’s Plan

The reported plan focuses on first seizing control of Gaza City and expanding aid distribution centers in coordination with the United States. The goal is to destroy what remains of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and pressure the group into releasing the 50 hostages it still holds—of whom around 50 are believed to be alive.

The execution of the plan will begin with the Israeli military taking over Gaza City and camps in the central Strip, driving approximately half of the enclave's population southward toward the Mawasi humanitarian zone. In the first phase, the Israeli military is expected to issue evacuation notices to around 1 million residents of Gaza City, giving them time to establish civilian infrastructure in central Gaza, including hospitals and camps for evacuees.

In the next phase, Israel is reportedly planning a military offensive in the area. During this time, US President Donald Trump is expected to announce the acceleration of humanitarian aid in coordination with Israel. The US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, told Bloomberg News that there are orders to fast-track the addition of 12 aid sites to the four currently operated by the Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Alternate Plans and Military Concerns

According to a Channel 12 report, an alternative plan on the table is to align with a proposed US-led framework for a comprehensive deal. If this plan advances, Israel may pause operations, but officials consider it an unlikely possibility. Another alternative plan to avoid full conquest involves encircling Gaza City and the central Gaza camps, blocking aid to those areas, and launching pinpoint raids to wear down Hamas. However, this approach has its drawbacks as it takes time.

Netanyahu has reportedly dismissed this plan. As the war nears its 23rd month, signs of a rift between the military and the Netanyahu government have emerged as they work to prepare the new plan. According to Israeli media, the military is concerned that expanding operations could endanger the 20 hostages who are still alive.

Military’s Warnings and Government Pushback

Israeli Army Radio reported that military chief Eyal Zamir has become increasingly frustrated with what he describes as a lack of strategic clarity by the political leadership, worried about being dragged into a war of attrition with Hamas militants. On Tuesday, Netanyahu held a three-hour meeting with security chiefs, including Zamir, to discuss options for the continuation of the war.

At the meeting, Zamir warned that a full occupation would be like "walking into a trap," according to public broadcaster Kan. Channel 12 television reported that the armed forces chief suggested alternatives to a full occupation, such as encircling specific areas where Hamas militants are believed to be hiding.

Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, stated that while "it is the right and duty of the chief of staff to express his position in the appropriate forums," the military is bound by any decisions made by the government. "Once decisions are made by the political echelon, the IDF will execute them with determination and professionalism," Katz said, using an acronym for the Israeli military.
