Sean Payton Celebrates Deion Sanders' Cancer Victory: 'Football's Better With Him'

A Heartfelt Message from Sean Payton to Deion Sanders
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton recently shared a heartfelt message of congratulations for Colorado Buffaloes' head coach Deion Sanders, following his successful battle with bladder cancer. This comes as Payton is in the early stages of his third training camp with the Broncos, and he was asked about Sanders’ recent health milestone.
The two have had a long-standing relationship since Payton’s early days in the NFL, and their mutual respect has remained strong over the years. During a press conference after the Broncos’ training camp practice, Payton expressed his pride and excitement for Sanders. “I texted him, I'm proud of him, excited for him, happy for him,” Payton said. “I consider him a close friend all the way back to when I first entered this league.”
Payton also reflected on his coaching history with Sanders, who was not only a player but also an offensive strategist. “He was calling offensive plays at one point when I met him, and I kind of looked at him with a funny eye, but he enjoyed that. His son (Shedeur) was like a sophomore at the time.” Payton added that it was great news to hear about Sanders’ recovery and that he and the Broncos are excited for what lies ahead.
A Personal Journey and Commitment to Coaching
Sanders kept his battle with cancer private until Monday, when he revealed during a press conference that he had undergone surgery to remove his bladder and is now cancer-free. Although he is still dealing with challenges related to his new bladder, which was created by using a small portion of his small intestine, Sanders remains fully committed to leading the Buffaloes this upcoming season.
“I always thought I was going to coach again,” Sanders said. “I never didn't realize I was going to coach again. I was always going to coach. It was never in my spirit, in my heart, that God wouldn't allow me to coach again. I never thought like that. I didn't want to be running down to the hospital once a week when I got all this on my plate. I didn't want that.”
A Shared Path in Football
Like Sanders, Payton is entering his third season with the Broncos. The team made a significant impact last season by reaching the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. With quarterback Bo Nix entering his second year, expectations are high for the upcoming season.
During the same time that Sanders was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer, Payton visited Boulder on April 4 for Colorado's pro day. While the Broncos did not draft or sign any former Buffs who participated, they invited several players to their rookie minicamp, including offensive lineman Justin Mayers, tight end Michael Harrison, defensive tackle Shane Cokes, and quarterback Blake Stenstrom. Wide receiver Will Sheppard later received an invite to Denver's mandatory minicamp as a tryout player.
A Growing Connection Between Two Coaches
The connection between Payton and Sanders extends beyond football. Their mutual respect and admiration for each other's work ethic and leadership have been evident throughout their careers. As both coaches continue to shape their respective teams, their paths have crossed in meaningful ways, highlighting the deep bonds that can form within the world of sports.
