Schumer Accuses Trump of 'Selling Out Ukraine' in Heated Exchange

Accusations of Selling Out Ukraine
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has accused President Donald Trump of “selling out” Ukraine after Trump did not announce an agreement to end the war following his major meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Schumer took to social media, formerly known as Twitter, to express his frustration. He wrote, “Looks like once again Trump is selling out Ukraine and bowing down to dictator Putin.” The statement was a direct response to Trump's lack of any significant announcement regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During the summit in Anchorage, Alaska, Trump claimed that he and Putin made “great progress.” However, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was not invited to the meeting, despite the absence of a deal on the war. This omission raised concerns among many observers about the implications for Ukraine’s position in the conflict.
In an interview on Fox News, Trump expressed confidence in the potential for a resolution. He said, “It’s really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done,” while adding, “we have a pretty good chance of getting it done.” Trump and Zelenskyy are expected to meet at the Oval Office on Monday.
A Controversial Nominations Mention
The controversy surrounding Trump’s actions came after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested that Trump could be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize if he successfully brokered a ceasefire with Putin. Trump responded to this idea by telling Fox News’ Brett Baier, “That was very nice. I might have to start liking her again.”
This comment highlights Trump's long-standing interest in receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, an award that he has previously criticized himself for not receiving. His rival, Barack Obama, and three other U.S. presidents have earned the honor, which Trump has often referenced in public statements.
Campaign for Recognition
Trump has repeatedly voiced his dissatisfaction over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. His allies have also been vocal in their support, offering nominations and publicly campaigning for the award. They cite examples of global peace deals and agreements that the White House claims Trump has helped negotiate.
Recently, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the president has “brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his six months in office.” She added that it is time for Trump to be recognized for these efforts.
Criticism from Schumer
In a separate post on X, Schumer criticized Putin, calling him an “authoritarian thug.” He accused Trump of “rolling out the red carpet” for the Russian leader, suggesting that Trump’s actions undermined the position of Ukraine and its allies.
“Donald Trump rolled out the red carpet for authoritarian thug Vladimir Putin. Instead of standing with Ukraine and our allies, Trump stood shoulder to shoulder with an autocrat that has terrorized the Ukrainian people and the globe for years,” he wrote.
Schumer further described the meeting between Trump and Putin as “just theater.” He expressed concerns that the encounter gave Putin legitimacy and a global stage without any accountability. “While we wait for critical details of what was discussed—on first take it appears Trump handed Putin legitimacy, a global stage, zero accountability, and got nothing in return,” he added.
Implications of the Summit
The summit placed Putin back on the global stage, reinforcing his position as a key player in international affairs. Trump’s alignment with the Kremlin’s stance has drawn criticism from various quarters, raising questions about the direction of U.S. foreign policy.
European leaders are set to join Ukraine's Zelenskyy for a White House meeting with Trump, highlighting the significance of the upcoming discussions. The event will likely be closely watched for any developments in the ongoing conflict.
