Ryan Gosling and the Mysterious Alien Make a Splash at San Diego Comic Con

At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, actor Ryan Gosling made a memorable appearance to promote his upcoming film Project Hail Mary, based on the novel by Andy Weir. The movie, which is still in post-production, will not be released until March 2026, but the cast and crew took the opportunity to share early footage with fans and discuss the project in detail.

Gosling walked onto the stage in Hall H wearing a flannel shirt and trucker hat, greeting the large crowd with a simple “What’s up Hall H?” He stars as Ryland Grace, a high school science teacher who wakes up on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. As the story unfolds, Grace learns that he is on a solo mission to save Earth from an impending catastrophe. The film is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, known for their work on 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, and features a script by Drew Goddard, who also adapted Weir’s earlier novel The Martian.

During the panel, attendees were shown the first five minutes of the film, along with some additional early scenes. In one scene, Gosling’s character, disoriented and wearing a white uniform, wakes up in a small spacecraft and begins to realize he is alone in space. He looks out a small window and shouts, “Where am I?!” Gosling joked about the look of his character in that scene, referring to himself as a “space caveman” in a “placenta onesie.”

The panel explained that Grace is not an astronaut but a teacher who ended up on the mission after several others dropped out. This unexpected twist adds an interesting layer to the story, making Grace a relatable yet unlikely hero.

One of the most intriguing elements of the film is Rocky, the alien who becomes Grace’s partner. Rocky appears as a large, gray, stone-shaped alien with no face. In the movie, Grace and Rocky slowly learn to communicate and collaborate on the mission. Although Rocky was unfinished in the early footage, the audience gave a positive reaction to the character.

Gosling avoided comparing Rocky to his past on-screen partnerships but described the character as central to the story’s emotional development. He shared that he connected with Grace’s reluctance and fear of the task ahead. “Aside from the fact that he has a doctorate in molecular biology, he’s quite an ordinary person,” Gosling said. “He reacts to a lot of things that I might or a lot of us might. He’s terrified — appropriately — of the task at hand.”

Andy Weir, who is credited as a producer, worked closely with the filmmakers to ensure the film’s scientific elements were accurate. “I spent hours going over every equation on every whiteboard,” he said. Lord and Miller added that the movie blends serious science with lighter moments. “This movie is not a Mac, it’s a PC,” Lord said. “It can be beautiful, it just can’t be pretty.”

When asked what drew him to the role, Gosling said, “I knew it would be brilliant, because it’s Andy, but nothing could prepare me. It took me places I’d never been, it showed me things I’d never seen, it was as heartbreaking as it was funny.”

Project Hail Mary is scheduled to be released in theaters in March 2026 by Amazon MGM Studios. The film promises to be a unique blend of science fiction, humor, and heartfelt storytelling, with Gosling’s performance at the center of it all. Fans are eagerly awaiting the full release, and the early reactions from Comic Con suggest that the movie will be a standout addition to the sci-fi genre.
