Rubio Disputes Claims of European Leaders Visiting White House to Shield Zelensky

U.S. Officials Dismiss Claims of European Leaders Accompanying Zelensky to Prevent Bullying
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed concerns about the presence of European leaders accompanying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. on August 18. The visit is expected to focus on advancing peace negotiations in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Rubio denied rumors that European leaders were joining Zelensky to shield him from potential pressure from Trump. In an interview with CBS, he called the idea a “stupid media narrative” and emphasized that the European delegation was present due to collaborative efforts between the U.S. and its allies.
“They’re not coming here tomorrow to keep Zelensky from being bullied,” Rubio said. “They’re coming here because we’ve been working with the Europeans — we talked to them last week; there were meetings in the U.K. over the previous weekend.”
The White House meeting follows Trump’s recent bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. During this summit, Ukraine and European nations were excluded, and no formal peace agreement was reached. Following the meeting, Trump reportedly abandoned his earlier demand for a ceasefire, shifting his stance toward a rapid peace deal.
According to reports, Trump is now reportedly supportive of a Russian proposal that would require Ukraine to cede control of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, including areas currently under Ukrainian administration, in exchange for peace. This proposal has drawn criticism from both Ukraine and its European allies.
Zelensky’s previous visit to the White House ended in controversy when Trump and U.S. Vice President JD Vance reportedly criticized the Ukrainian leader, leading to his removal from the Oval Office. After the incident, the U.S. temporarily halted military aid to Ukraine.
Despite these tensions, the current meeting aims to address the evolving dynamics of the war. Rubio acknowledged that the Alaska Summit had brought all parties closer to a potential peace deal, even if no immediate agreement was reached.
“If not, we wouldn’t be having Zelensky flying all the way over here. We wouldn’t be having all the Europeans coming all the way over here,” Rubio said.
The list of European leaders accompanying Zelensky includes French President Emmanuel Macron, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
This high-level gathering underscores the growing international interest in finding a resolution to the war. While the exact terms of the discussions remain unclear, the involvement of multiple European leaders highlights the complexity of the situation and the need for coordinated diplomatic efforts.
As the meeting approaches, the focus will likely center on balancing U.S. interests with those of its allies and ensuring that any proposed peace agreement reflects the needs and concerns of all involved parties.
