Rubio Condemns 'Stupid Media Narrative' on Trump and Zelensky Deal

Marco Rubio Dismisses Claims of U.S. Pressure on Ukraine
Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed frustration during a Sunday interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation” when confronted with concerns that President Donald Trump might pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into an unfavorable peace agreement. He called the idea a “stupid media narrative.”
During the interview, host Margaret Brennan raised the issue, noting that European leaders were reportedly worried about Zelensky being “bullied into signing something away.” She asked if there was a way to reassure them.
Rubio immediately pushed back, stating, “That’s not true. They’re not coming here tomorrow to keep Zelensky from being bullied.” He emphasized that the European leaders attending a meeting with Trump and Zelensky on Monday were not there to prevent any such outcome.
Instead, he pointed out that the U.S. has held more meetings with Zelensky and Ukraine than with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also highlighted that Trump has maintained regular communication with Zelensky’s allies in Europe.
“They’re coming here tomorrow because we’ve been working with the Europeans,” Rubio said. “We talked to them last week. There were meetings in the U.K. over the previous weekend.”
He became increasingly frustrated as Brennan repeated the claim that the European leaders were coming to prevent Trump from bullying Zelensky. “This is such a stupid media narrative that they’re coming here tomorrow because… Trump is going to bully Zelensky into a bad deal,” he said.
Rubio reiterated that the European leaders had chosen to attend the meeting, as they had been invited by the president. He stressed that the U.S. had been engaging with European allies for weeks on this issue.
Tensions at Previous Meetings
One reason some may be concerned about Trump pressuring Zelensky is the recent meeting at the White House where Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President Mike Pence got into a shouting match. During that encounter, Trump and Pence reportedly criticized Zelensky so harshly that he was effectively asked to leave the White House.
Additionally, after Trump’s summit with Putin in Alaska, he suggested that whether a ceasefire would be reached would depend on Zelensky and Ukraine. This appeared to shift responsibility onto Ukraine to make concessions for a potential deal.
Rubio dismissed claims that Trump gave Putin an overly warm reception during their meeting. When Brennan pointed out that Trump had warned of severe consequences if a ceasefire wasn’t reached but didn’t follow up with any meaningful action, Rubio defended the administration’s approach.
“We felt enough progress was made to move forward and have another meeting,” he said. “Our goal here is not to stage some production for the world to say, ‘Oh, how dramatic, he walked out.’”
The Path to Peace
Rubio acknowledged that Russia and Ukraine were not on the verge of a peace deal, but he believed there had been enough progress to justify the upcoming meeting with Zelensky and European leaders.
He also addressed the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia if a deal couldn’t be reached. While he admitted that such actions could end negotiations, he argued that it would be necessary if peace remained unattainable.
“If peace is not going to be possible here, and this is just going to continue on as a war, people will continue to die by the thousands,” he said. “The president has that option to then come in and impose new sanctions.”
However, he cautioned that implementing additional sanctions now would likely prolong the conflict for at least another year or more.
“We may unfortunately wind up there, but we don’t want to wind up there,” Rubio said. “We want to wind up with a peace deal that ends this war so Ukraine can go on with the rest of their lives and rebuild their country and be assured that this is never going to happen again.”
