The Safety Concerns of Cruise Ship Water Slides

As cruise ships continue to evolve into massive floating resorts, the inclusion of water slides has become a common feature. However, recent incidents have raised concerns about the safety of these attractions. One such incident occurred on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas in August, where a passenger was injured when a piece of acrylic glass broke off from a slide. While the passenger did not fall through a hole, the incident has sparked questions about the design and maintenance of such facilities.

The Icon of the Seas, which can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers and crew, is considered the largest cruise ship in the world since its launch in 2024. Despite its size and popularity, the incident highlights the potential risks associated with onboard water slides. These attractions are often designed for land-based environments, but they must be adapted to fit the limited space available on a cruise ship. This can lead to structural challenges that may compromise safety.

Design and Maintenance Challenges

According to personal-injury lawyer Jason Margulies, the slides on cruise ships are not always ideal for the environment they operate in. He explains that the constant movement of a ship can put additional stress on the structures, leading to faster degradation of materials. This issue is compounded by the fact that cruise lines are responsible for ensuring the safety of their attractions without the same level of oversight as land-based water parks.

Margulies’ firm is representing the injured passenger from the Icon of the Seas incident. In a statement, attorney Alex Perez emphasized that cruise ships have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their attractions. “Our client and his family are dealing with the catastrophic injuries suffered in this preventable incident,” he said, adding that the family is seeking privacy to heal.

Royal Caribbean stated that the guest involved in the incident is receiving treatment for his injuries and that the water slide remains closed for the remainder of the sailing while an investigation takes place.

Past Incidents and Legal Implications

This is not the first time that cruise-ship slides have been linked to injuries. In 2015, a passenger on a Carnival Cruise Line ship was severely injured due to issues with the waterslide. According to court records, the case was settled after mediation. Carnival stated that it has dedicated engineering and maintenance teams to ensure the safety of its attractions.

Another incident occurred in 2022 aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, where a passenger became stuck on a slide. A TikTok video of the event gained significant attention online, with many viewers expressing concern. Norwegian Cruise Line did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

Royce D’Orazio, a former amusement-park ride technician, points out that such incidents often indicate a lack of preventative maintenance. “Where was the preventative maintenance?” he questioned, referring to the recent Royal Caribbean incident. He also highlighted operational issues, such as weight restrictions, which must be strictly enforced to prevent structural failures.

Regulatory Oversight and Industry Response

While land-based water parks are subject to state regulations requiring regular inspections, cruise ships face a different regulatory landscape. The U.S. Coast Guard has authority over safety compliance for ships operating in U.S. waters, but it does not inspect water slides or other entertainment equipment. As a result, the responsibility for maintaining these attractions falls entirely on the cruise lines.

Florida attorney Jason Turchin, who has handled cases involving cruise ships, emphasizes that the burden of ensuring safety lies with the cruise lines themselves. “The burden lies solely with the lines to make sure rides are up to the standards of the manufacturer,” he said.

Despite these concerns, the cruise industry continues to thrive. In 2024, 34.6 million passengers boarded ships, marking a 9.3% increase from the previous year, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). While incidents like those involving water slides are relatively rare, they raise important questions about the balance between innovation and safety.

Passenger Perspectives

Regular cruise-ship passenger Melissa Newman, who shares her travel experiences online, says she is not overly concerned about the safety of onboard attractions. She believes that the fear of reputational damage is enough to keep cruise lines vigilant. “I know that their fear of massive reputational damage from even one tragedy is enough to keep cruise lines vigilant,” she said.

As the industry continues to grow, the need for improved safety measures and clearer regulations becomes increasingly apparent. With more passengers enjoying the amenities offered on modern cruise ships, the focus must remain on ensuring that these attractions are as safe as possible.
