A Sweet Journey of Passion and Perseverance

For Sam Rose, ice cream has always been more than just a treat—it’s a symbol of joy and personal achievement. From his early days in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where he founded Rosebud Ice Cream, Rose has carried with him a deep appreciation for the simple pleasure of enjoying an ice cream cone while watching the sunset. This cherished memory has become a driving force behind his entrepreneurial journey.

Rosebud Ice Cream is set to expand its reach by launching on DoorDash and Gopuff starting August 4. This new venture marks another milestone in the company’s growth. Additionally, Rosebud Ice Cream has been selected as one of four companies in the Midwest Dairy Accelerator’s first cohort. The program offers valuable resources and opportunities for innovation, which Rose hopes will further refine his craft and elevate his product.

From a young age, Rose displayed an entrepreneurial spirit. He recalls selling "cool-looking" rocks, producing sketch comedy videos, and even crafting mini business plans. These early experiences laid the foundation for his future endeavors. When a friend jokingly suggested that he open an ice cream shop during his senior year at DePaul University, Rose took the idea seriously. His motivation was clear: he wanted to create the best ice cream in the country, something he felt was lacking in the U.S. market.

Equipped with a basic ice cream maker from a local department store, Rose began experimenting in his mother's kitchen in Western Springs. His first attempt didn’t go well, but it sparked a determination to improve. "Making ice cream was nowhere near as easy as eating it," he admitted. Each week, he refined his technique, focusing on perfecting flavor and texture.

After graduating from DePaul, Rose took a job at a high-end ice cream shop in Denver to gain experience with professional-grade equipment. This hands-on learning helped shape his approach to making ice cream. In 2019, Rosebud Ice Cream officially launched, and today, the brand can be found in stores across multiple states, including Illinois, Ohio, California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, and Louisiana.

As part of the Midwest Dairy Accelerator, Rose is now immersed in a program designed to support growth and innovation. Over eight weeks, participants engage in workshops, collaborative sessions, and mentorship opportunities. On September 3, they will present business pitches in hopes of winning the top prize of $20,000, with the first runner-up receiving $10,000. For Rose, this is an exciting opportunity to connect with industry experts and gain insights that could propel his business forward.

"I’m looking forward to gaining access to a great network of professionals in the dairy space who can help me navigate this stage of business’ growth," Rose said. He also expressed hope that a successful pitch day could lead to the grand prize, further fueling his ambitions.

Rose’s dedication to creating exceptional ice cream stems from a desire to bring joy to others. His everyday goal is to make people happy through Rosebud Ice Cream. Reflecting on that vivid memory of his childhood ice cream cone at sunset, he shared, "That blissful memory from a very simple time brings me joy to think about. My hope is that when people eat our ice cream, they’re transported to whatever their sunset ice cream cone moment is too."

Through hard work, perseverance, and a passion for quality, Rose continues to build a legacy that celebrates the simple pleasures in life. With each scoop of ice cream, he aims to create moments of happiness that resonate with customers and remind them of their own cherished memories.
