The Hershey High School Marching Band Faces the Heat with Determination

As temperatures rise above 90 degrees, the Hershey High School Marching Band is showing no signs of slowing down. With a total of 123 members, the band has been immersed in their weeklong band camp, facing the intense heat head-on to sharpen their skills and strengthen their team bonds. This year’s group includes 47 freshmen, 30 seniors, and students from other grade levels in between, making it one of the largest marching bands the school has ever seen.

The camp started outdoors, where students practiced marching and playing their instruments under the blazing sun. Many found the heat particularly challenging, especially those carrying heavier equipment. However, the students embraced the challenge with a strong sense of determination.

“It’s definitely quite exhausting,” said junior assistant drum major Nassar Sarwani. “But everyone is willing to do it, and they’re here.”

As the temperature continued to climb, the band made the decision to move indoors to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. “As soon as it gets a little too hot, we head inside and spend the rest of the day there,” said Brandon Buterbaugh, the band’s director.

Despite the heat, the band’s morale remained high. Senior assistant drum major Clara Ruff shared, “I don’t think I’ve been dry in several hours, but it’s really worth it at the end of the week.”

To keep the energy levels up, the band introduced daily themes such as Beach Day and Twin Day. These themes gave students something to look forward to each day and helped maintain a positive atmosphere.

“It gives everyone something to look forward to every day,” Sarwani said.

Safety was a top priority throughout the camp. The band’s booster organization played a crucial role by setting up tents for shade and providing daily supplies of Gatorade to ensure that everyone stayed hydrated. Band leadership also ensured that students took regular breaks and maintained proper hydration.

“We wouldn’t be able to do this without our booster organization,” Buterbaugh said. “It’s a collaborative effort.”

Indoor practices have proven beneficial for section rehearsals, allowing students to focus on perfecting their music. This year’s halftime theme, titled “Clocked In,” reflects the journey of life — from its beginnings to the milestones that shape us along the way.

For these students, the band camp is more than just a series of practices; it’s a milestone in their lives. It’s a time to come together, work hard, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

With sheer determination, camaraderie, and leadership, the Hershey High School Marching Band is proving that teamwork and passion can overcome even the hottest of days. Their commitment to excellence and their ability to adapt to changing conditions are testaments to their resilience and dedication.

As the band continues through the challenges of the summer, they remain focused on their goals and the joy of being part of something bigger than themselves. Their story is one of perseverance, unity, and the power of a shared vision.
