Residents Fret Over Rising Gunfire in Burlington's Old North End

A Neighborhood in Transition
Nestled in the heart of Burlington's Old North End, St. Louis Street is known for its vibrant community spirit and scenic charm. During the day, residents enjoy the warmth of their neighborhood, with children playing outside and neighbors exchanging friendly greetings as they take leisurely strolls. For Fahrid Quraishi, who has called this street home for the past four years, these daytime moments have been a source of comfort and joy.
However, the peace of the neighborhood is often disrupted after sunset. Quraishi described how the atmosphere shifts dramatically once the sun sets. “In the daytime, you hear kids playing, and it’s like a lovely neighborhood,” he said. “Then at nighttime there's a shift in the winds.”
This shift became all too real on Sunday evening when gunfire shattered the quiet of St. Louis Street. According to Quraishi, the sound of gunshots echoed through the intersection of St. Louis Street and Manhattan Drive around 9:30 p.m. His neighbors' Ring camera footage captured the alarming moment, adding a visual element to the growing concerns among residents.
Quraishi shared that his family was out for a walk when they heard one loud gunshot followed by two more minutes later, just behind a neighbor's house. The sound of a car speeding away left them shaken. This wasn't the first time the neighborhood had experienced such disturbances. Two days earlier, Quraishi awoke to the same sound around 2:30 a.m., hearing three loud shots before seeing cars speed away from the scene.
Rising Concerns and Community Response
Burlington police are actively investigating both incidents, using shell casings as evidence. The department has also increased patrols in the area, which has brought some reassurance to local residents. Gene Bergman, a long-time resident and city councilor for Ward 2, expressed his appreciation for the enhanced police presence. “The police response, I think, has been really great,” he said. “I have noticed, throughout this entire period, an increase in patrols.”
Despite the positive steps taken by law enforcement, many residents remain concerned about the ongoing issues affecting their neighborhood. Sarah Raubenheimer, who lives across from Quraishi, highlighted the problem of car break-ins. “If we don’t lock our cars, they immediately get robbed,” she said.
The challenges extend beyond crime. Encampments along the bike path at the end of St. Louis Street have added another layer of concern for residents. These issues have become increasingly familiar, prompting calls for more comprehensive solutions.
Calls for Action and Community Unity
Quraishi emphasized the need for the city to address the safety concerns in the neighborhood. “We’re invested in our community, but if we are continuously going to be targets of theft and gun violence, then this is not a safe neighborhood for us to stay,” he said.
Bergman acknowledged the community's concerns and is committed to finding lasting solutions. “It is terrible to be violated in any way, so we have to figure out how to deal with the convergence of a lot of issues,” he said.
The Burlington Police Department has reiterated its commitment to addressing the incidents. Deputy Chief Brian LaBarge stated that the Detective Services Bureau is actively investigating both cases. “Along with other investigative measures, Detectives are canvassing the neighborhoods and have spoken with several community members, as well as staff from the Boys and Girls Club. We have also been in touch with our Federal partners associated with Chittenden County Gun Violence Task Force.”
Residents are encouraged to come forward with any information related to the incidents. Those with knowledge of the events are asked to contact the department at 802-540-2282.
As the community continues to grapple with these challenges, the hope remains that collective efforts will lead to a safer and more secure environment for all.
