A New Bill Proposes a Major Renaming

Missouri Representative Bob Onder has introduced a bill titled the “Make Entertainment Great Again Act,” which proposes renaming the Kennedy Center as the “Donald J. Trump Center for Performing Arts.” This initiative comes on the heels of another proposal that was advanced by the House Appropriations Committee, which aimed to rename the Kennedy Center's Opera House after First Lady Melania Trump.

Onder, who is 63 years old, argued that President Donald Trump has made a significant impact on entertainment over the past four decades. He cited Trump’s appearances on reality TV shows like The Apprentice, his cameos in films such as Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and his unique status as the only U.S. president to host Saturday Night Live. According to Onder, Trump’s contributions to the arts make him a fitting namesake for the center.

Historical Background of the Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center, originally conceived as the National Cultural Center, began planning in the 1950s. However, construction started in December 1964 under the name "living memorial" for John F. Kennedy, who had been assassinated the previous year. Over time, the center became a symbol of American culture and artistic excellence.

In early 2023, President Trump announced his intention to “make the Kennedy Center great again.” He took control of the institution, replacing its leadership with conservative allies and appointing Richard Grenell as its president and interim director. Trump criticized the previous management, claiming some performances were “a disgrace” and stating he had not attended any shows at the center.

Despite this, the Trumps did attend a performance of Les Misérables in June, where they received a mixed reaction from the audience.

Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, shared a federal law that prohibits the addition of new memorials or plaques at the center. He emphasized that the law clearly states that no renaming can occur.

Maria Shriver, another member of the Kennedy family, expressed her outrage over the proposals, calling them “insane” and “petty.” She questioned the motives behind such efforts, suggesting that the focus on renaming institutions may be part of a broader pattern of political maneuvering.
