The ongoing debate over the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files has become a significant point of contention within the Republican Party, with key figures like Rep. Thomas Massie and House Speaker Mike Johnson at odds over how to handle the issue. Despite efforts by House leadership to avoid contentious votes on the matter, the discussion continues to dominate political discourse.

In a series of interviews on Sunday, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) emphasized his push for a bipartisan resolution aimed at securing the release of the files. He argued that transparency is essential, stating, “I don’t know why it should be politically painful to be transparent.” Massie’s resolution, which he co-sponsored with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California, includes privacy safeguards to protect victims. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) expressed concerns that the measure does not go far enough to protect those involved.

Johnson defended his decision to adjourn the House early for recess, claiming it was necessary to prevent Democrats from using the Epstein issue for political messaging. He also highlighted that there is no “daylight” between his position and the White House’s, noting that both are focused on releasing “credible” information from the files. However, he did not commit to holding a vote on another nonbinding Republican resolution that urges the Justice Department to release specific Epstein files.

This disagreement highlights a broader divide among House Republicans on the issue. The controversy has intensified as GOP voters demand answers following years of conspiracy theories surrounding the convicted sex offender, particularly under the Trump administration. The Justice Department’s recent announcement that it would not release more Epstein files has sparked fierce backlash from Trump’s base, who continue to demand information about the disgraced financier and his associates.

Some Republicans, like Massie, have been vocal about advocating for transparency and criticizing the administration’s handling of the situation. Others, however, have deferred to former President Donald Trump, who initially urged his supporters to move on from the issue. After facing significant criticism, Trump shifted his stance and called for the disclosure of grand jury testimony related to Epstein, although a judge has declined to release it.

The tensions between Massie and Johnson reflect the growing rift within the party over how to address the Epstein files. Prominent MAGA conservatives, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), and Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), have joined Massie and Khanna in supporting their resolution. If successful, this could lead to a House vote compelling the Justice Department to release the files, further highlighting the party’s internal divisions.

Massie warned that inaction on the issue could have serious consequences for the GOP in upcoming elections. “This is going to hurt Republicans in the midterms,” he said. “The voters will be apathetic if we don’t hold the rich and powerful accountable.”
