Political Tensions Over Jeffrey Epstein Files Intensify
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) expressed concerns that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) might attempt to alter the rules of the House to prevent a vote on releasing documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. This comes after Massie introduced a discharge petition, a procedural tool designed to bring a specific bill to the floor for a vote if it is being blocked by leadership.
The bill in question aims to compel the Justice Department to release all files it holds on Epstein, a convicted sex offender who was accused of running a blackmail operation targeting influential individuals. Massie highlighted that the House rules, which were approved during the same week that Johnson was elected as speaker, were intended to allow grassroots bills to reach the floor when they are being obstructed by leadership.
“I really hope that Mike Johnson doesn't try to pull a fast one when we get back in September and rewrite the rules to get around this preliminary procedure that he agreed to in the rules, the discharge petition,” Massie stated.
Johnson has criticized Massie, accusing him of playing “political games” and claiming that the Kentucky Republican is “trying to bite Republicans.” The speaker has consistently opposed efforts to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files, even going so far as to adjourn the House early for the summer to stall Massie’s initiatives.
Although the early August recess has temporarily halted Massie’s discharge petition, he has vowed to reintroduce it once the House reconvenes. He believes the delay will ultimately harm the Republican Party in the long term.
“I don't think this issue is going to go away, I think it's going to fester over the August recess,” Massie said. “We needed seven legislative days for my bill to ripen, we only got six before the August recess, so as soon as we come back, I'm going to collect signatures.”
While President Donald Trump has not directly addressed Massie’s petition, he has criticized what he called “stupid” and “foolish” Republicans who have supported theories surrounding Epstein. On Monday, Trump labeled Massie as the “worst Republican congressman” and expressed hope that he would be replaced by a primary challenger.
Critics have pointed to Trump’s attempts to move past the Epstein matter, noting the increasing evidence that suggests a closer relationship between Trump and Epstein than previously disclosed. A recent report revealed that Trump was informed by his own DOJ that he was listed in the Epstein files.
Massie needs 218 signatures to make his discharge petition successful. With nearly all House Democrats eager to use the files against Trump and some Republican members supporting the measure, Massie remains confident that the House will eventually be forced to vote on the issue.
He also warned that continued resistance from Republicans to release the Epstein files could result in significant losses for the GOP in the upcoming midterm elections.
“The MAGA base, they voted for a Republican majority and Donald Trump to be president to reach the untouchables, because there have always been this class of people that seem to be above and beyond the law, and so the Epstein files are about reaching those people,” Massie explained.
“Here's the problem for us here in the House: if those voters who got energized and put Trump in the White House and us in the majority become apathetic because we don't follow up on this one simple, small promise, then they're not going to show up in the midterms. We're going to lose the majority, and the Democrats will be in charge.”
