The Latest Push for Impeachment

Representative Al Green (D-TX) has reignited his campaign to impeach former President Donald Trump, presenting 19 articles of impeachment against the former leader. This comes after a previous attempt last month that failed due to bipartisan opposition, with all Republicans voting against the resolution and 128 Democratic representatives joining in to table the articles.

Green described Trump as an "authoritarian president who is devolving our democracy into an autocracy." He emphasized that the current set of articles, which he refers to as the “sword of democracy,” serves as a warning over Trump's head. These articles are not aimed at harming Trump physically but rather at addressing the damage he has caused to the country.

“We have one article that is currently on file. Articles on file, I call them the ‘sword of democracy,’ similar to the sword of Damocles, over his head, and at some point, we will drop this sort of democracy, not to harm him physically. This is not about his physicality, but to harm him as it relates to what he's doing to our country. Then we can impeach him with these articles,” Green said outside the Capitol on Wednesday.

In addition to the existing articles, Green mentioned that there are more that he plans to present in the future. He stressed that this effort is not a one-time occurrence but will continue as long as Trump breaches the Constitution.

Support from Activists and Organizations

Green was joined by political activists from the Women’s March and Free Speech For People. These groups delivered a petition to Rep. Jamie Raskin’s (D-MD) staff, claiming to have collected one million signatures from individuals demanding Trump’s impeachment.

Raskin, who served as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee during Trump’s first term, was among the Democratic leaders who supported impeachment charges against Trump. However, he voted against Green’s recent effort.

Green’s earlier push focused on Trump’s military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, which he deemed “illegal and unconstitutional.” The new petition includes 19 articles of impeachment, covering issues such as Trump’s use of military forces against civilian protesters in Los Angeles, his executive order targeting birthright citizenship, and accepting foreign and domestic emoluments, including a Qatari jet.

Timing and Political Dynamics

The House is beginning its August recess early, starting later on Wednesday evening. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) released members a day earlier than planned, aiming to address GOP frustrations over the Trump administration’s refusal to release files related to disgraced sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

When asked if introducing impeachment again before the recess could affect the timing of a vote, Green argued that “one day does not impact what we are going to do.”

“This number is growing,” Green said regarding the petition signatures. “It will be larger when we get back — one day doesn't make a difference.”

He added, “It is always good to impeach when a president violates the Constitution. It really is that simple.”

Internal Party Concerns

Despite Green’s efforts, high-ranking Democrats have shown dissatisfaction with his moves to impeach Trump. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), and Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar (D-CA) all opposed his June push.

Green argues that he needs to “lay the foundation” for impeachment to gain more support within his party. He believes that the current efforts are crucial in building momentum.

“This is the foundation. These people are laying the foundation. And I assure you that these opinions are going to change. It's just a matter of time,” Green stated.
