Introducing Denari: A New Defender with Revolutionary Laser Traps

After the launch of Rainbow Six Siege X, Ubisoft has resumed its steady release of new operators. The first addition to the Siege X era is Denari, a Swiss defender who brings an innovative set of laser traps that could make Aruni envious.

During a remote preview event last week, I had the chance to play with Denari and quickly became familiar with his T.R.I.P. laser emitters. These devices are highly versatile—Denari gets seven of them, which can be tossed anywhere on the map. They can link together into a web of stinging tripwires, provided nothing blocks their path.

Compared to Aruni’s laser prisons, which only work on doors, windows, and walls, Denari's lasers offer much more flexibility. They can span entire rooms and even connect from one space to another, forcing attackers to constantly deal with them. With just two emitters, Denari can cover a space that would require most of Aruni’s gates.

However, this flexibility comes with a trade-off. While Aruni’s gates are indestructible and can be reactivated, T.R.I.P. emitters are as fragile as any other throwable trap. They can be shot, exploded, zapped, hacked, or deactivated with an EMP. This means it's not always wise to use all seven emitters in one room, as losing just one connecting emitter might break the entire grid.

Another key difference is that T.R.I.P. lasers don’t shut down after being triggered. They deal only 5-10 damage, which is barely noticeable. In contrast, Aruni’s gates deal 30 damage, making them more punishing. While Denari’s lasers are annoying, they become easy to eliminate once you can see them. Unlike Aruni, who can force time-crunched attackers to abandon plans, Denari is more about delaying the inevitable.

Denari’s Full Kit and Playstyle

Denari’s kit includes:

  • Speed: 3
  • Armor: 1

This movement advantage is becoming increasingly rare in Siege.

Primary Weapons: - Scorpion EVO SMG
- FMG-9 SMG

Secondary Weapons: - Glaive-12 slug shotgun
- P226 MK25 pistol

Gadgets: - Deployable Shield
- Observation Blockers

Denari is equipped with one of the most popular SMGs in the game: Ela’s Scorpion EVO. Combined with his speed, this makes him a strong roamer. However, his secondary gadgets suggest a more defensive, anchor-style playstyle.

One standout feature in his backup holster is the Glaive-12, a new secondary slug shotgun that holds four shells per reload. Think of the Glaive as a pocket BOSG—it delivers a two-shot kill to the body with high destruction, making it perfect for opening surprise angles or destroying debris blocking T.R.I.P. connections.

Who Might Denari Replace?

Judging an operator’s viability this early is risky, but it's interesting to consider who Denari might replace in regular rotations. He could potentially take over from Ela, though her concussion mines are easier to hide and more oppressive than lasers.

More likely candidates for reduced playtime are Melusi and Alibi, two defenders who are more attractive for their weapons than their distraction traps.

Upcoming Map Updates

If Denari doesn't appeal to you right now, there’s still something to look forward to: three maps will receive "modernized" visual updates next season. These include Nighthaven Labs, Lair, and Consulate. During a play session, I saw the remastered versions of these maps and was impressed by the dramatic lighting and updated textures.

That said, the selection of these three maps feels somewhat random. Both Lair and Nighthaven are still relatively new, and many players avoid them in Ranked matches. Nighthaven, however, is actually excellent. It’s likely that Consulate will be the only map to receive enthusiastic reactions.

Test Server for Operation High Stakes

The test server for Operation High Stakes will begin tomorrow, August 18. Test servers usually last a few weeks, so the full update is expected to arrive in early September. The naming of each season as a classic Rainbow Six mission continues to add a fun element to the game.
