Putin's Plan to End Ukraine War Revealed

New Developments in the Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks
Recent discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump have revealed potential peace proposals that could reshape the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to sources familiar with Moscow's thinking, these talks suggested a complex exchange of territorial concessions and security guarantees.
The meeting took place at an airforce base in Alaska, marking the first encounter between a U.S. president and the Kremlin leader since the start of the Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is set to travel to Washington to discuss possible solutions to the full-scale war initiated by Putin in February 2022.
Although the summit did not result in a ceasefire as Trump had hoped, he indicated that he and Putin had discussed land transfers and security assurances for Ukraine. "I think we're pretty close to a deal," Trump said, acknowledging that Ukraine would need to agree to any proposal.
Key Terms of the Proposed Agreement
According to the sources, who wished to remain anonymous, the proposed agreement involves significant territorial adjustments. Russia would potentially relinquish small areas of occupied Ukraine, while Kyiv might cede larger portions of its eastern territories that Moscow has failed to capture.
Under the proposed plan, Ukraine would fully withdraw from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which are currently under Russian control. In return, Russia would pledge to freeze the front lines in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. However, this proposal faces considerable resistance from Ukraine, which views the Donbas region as a critical defensive barrier against further Russian advances.
Russia is reportedly willing to return smaller tracts of occupied land in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. These areas, totaling around 440 square kilometers, are relatively minor compared to the larger territories claimed by Russia in Donbas. Ukraine controls approximately 6,600 square kilometers of Donbas, which is claimed by Russia.
Additional Demands and Uncertainties
Beyond territorial exchanges, the sources indicated that Russia seeks formal recognition of its sovereignty over Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. It remains unclear whether this recognition would be extended to the U.S. government or all Western powers and Ukraine. Kyiv and its European allies strongly oppose such recognition.
Additionally, Russia may expect the lifting of some sanctions, though the extent of this remains uncertain. Trump mentioned that he was not immediately considering retaliatory tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil but acknowledged the possibility in the near future.
Ukraine would also be barred from joining NATO, although Putin appeared open to providing some form of security guarantees. The details of these guarantees remain unclear, but European leaders noted that Trump had discussed them during his conversations on Saturday.
Broader Implications
Other demands include official status for the Russian language within parts of or across Ukraine, as well as the right of the Russian Orthodox Church to operate freely. Ukraine's security agency accuses the church of supporting Russia's war efforts through propaganda and espionage, claims the church denies. Despite passing a law banning Russia-linked religious organizations, Ukraine has not yet enforced the ban.
These proposals highlight the complexity of the situation and the challenges ahead for both sides in reaching a lasting peace. As discussions continue, the international community will be closely watching how these developments unfold.
