Putin and Zelensky to Meet for Peace Summit Following Trump Talks

Potential Peace Summit Between Russian and Ukrainian Leaders
Recent developments suggest that a potential peace summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may be on the horizon. This possibility emerged following fast-moving discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders, with the central topic being long-term security guarantees for Kyiv.
Hopes for a breakthrough increased after Trump revealed he had spoken by phone with Putin, whom he met in Alaska just days earlier. The conversation took place after what Trump described as a "very good" meeting with European leaders and Zelensky at the White House. This would mark the first direct meeting between the two leaders since Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly three and a half years ago, and it comes as Trump continues to push for a swift resolution to the conflict.
Trump shared his optimism on his Truth Social platform, stating, "Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine." He also mentioned that he had begun arranging a meeting between Putin and Zelensky at an unspecified location. Trump further indicated that he would participate in a three-way summit with both leaders.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed that Putin had agreed to a bilateral meeting within the next two weeks, although no official date or location has been announced yet.
Zelensky’s Readiness for Direct Talks
Zelensky addressed reporters outside the White House, confirming his readiness to engage in direct talks with Putin. Despite the significant loss of life caused by Russia’s invasion, Zelensky emphasized his willingness to pursue dialogue. A Kremlin aide also stated that Putin was open to the idea of direct negotiations with Ukraine.
The war has reached a near-stalemate, with only minor advances from Russia. However, Trump’s previous summit with Putin last Friday did not result in a ceasefire. In response, Zelensky quickly traveled to the White House to meet with Trump, who had been urging the Ukrainian leader to make concessions to Russia.
European leaders, including those from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Commission, and NATO, joined the discussions, signaling strong support for Ukraine. Zelensky also met one-on-one with Trump in the Oval Office, marking their first encounter since a tense exchange in February. Zelensky described the meeting as their "best" yet, noting a reduction in the tensions that had previously erupted when Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized him publicly.
Security Guarantees and International Reactions
During the meetings, Trump discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, stating that Putin had agreed to them, despite rejecting Kyiv's longstanding goal of joining NATO. Trump explained that these guarantees would be provided by European countries, with coordination from the United States.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the discussions, calling them "very successful" and emphasizing that the focus was on security guarantees, increased U.S. involvement, and detailed planning over the coming days.
According to reports from the Financial Times, Ukraine had committed to purchasing $100 billion worth of U.S. weapons, funded by Europe, in exchange for U.S. security guarantees. Zelensky later mentioned a $90 billion package and stated that Ukraine and its allies would formalize the terms of the security guarantees within 10 days.
Despite these developments, European leaders remain cautious about Trump’s potential shift toward Putin, given his history of favoring a more conciliatory approach. Trump had previously urged Ukraine to relinquish Crimea and abandon its NATO aspirations—key demands from Putin.
French President Emmanuel Macron called for increased sanctions against Russia if Putin does not advance peace efforts. Finnish President Alex Stubb expressed skepticism about Putin’s trustworthiness, while German Chancellor Merz warned against forcing Ukraine to surrender its Donbas region. Merz compared such a demand to asking the U.S. to give up Florida.
