A Heartwarming Surprise in the Skies

A touching moment in the sky brought tears to the eyes of passengers and left a lasting memory for one family. This unforgettable event was made possible by a southern Utah pilot, Justin Shurtz, and his grandmother, who played a significant role in raising him.

When airline captain Justin Shurtz discovered that his grandmother, Carolyn, was coming to visit him in St. George for the first time, he wanted to create an extraordinary experience for her. With the support of American Airlines, he found a way to transform a routine flight into a memorable occasion.

Justin’s plan involved surprising his grandmother on the final leg of her trip to Las Vegas. However, achieving this required some effort. He had to contact the crew operating the flight and ask for their assistance. In an interview, Justin shared, “I called the captain and asked for help.”

After navigating through several steps, Justin managed to switch flights with the original crew. Meanwhile, Carolyn remained unaware of what was about to happen. She expected to be picked up in Las Vegas, not to see her grandson on the same flight.

Justin stayed hidden in the cockpit until the right moment arrived. When he came over the intercom to share the story of his grandparents, who raised him in Memphis, Carolyn suddenly realized who was flying her plane.

“I’ll never forget the moment when she jumped out into the aisle and saw me standing there,” Justin said. “The look on her face was unforgettable. At that point, I got nervous, but I was extremely excited because it finally sank in that this was real.”

The emotional reunion was not only meaningful for Justin and Carolyn but also for all the passengers on board. For Carolyn, it was a moment filled with gratitude and pride. She expressed how proud she was of her grandson's achievements.

“I know how hard we struggled and how well they’re doing. You understand? And so that was my biggest thing, just how proud he made me at that moment,” Carolyn shared.

Justin emphasized that everything he has achieved, including becoming a captain, is due to the unwavering support of his grandparents. They were always there for him, encouraging him to reach his full potential.

Unfortunately, Justin’s grandfather passed away this year in April and never had the chance to fly with his grandson commercially. Justin shared, “There was a lot of crying at first, especially when we were talking about my grandpa. He got to fly with me once in a small airplane a very long time ago, when I first started flying.”

Carolyn, however, believes her husband would have been proud of Justin. “He never would’ve left his side,” she said. “He would have been right there with him if he could have been there. He said, ‘Scoot over, I’m sitting by Justin.’ He would have been extremely pleased.”

This heartwarming story highlights the deep bond between family members and the impact of love and support. It serves as a reminder of the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones, no matter how far apart they may be.
