Mike Pence Supports Trump’s Crime Crackdown in Washington, D.C.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has publicly expressed his support for former President Donald Trump’s recent efforts to address crime in Washington, D.C. This came during an appearance on CNN’s "State of the Union," where he was questioned by Jake Tapper about Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to the nation’s capital.

Tapper began by highlighting that Trump had sent hundreds of National Guard members to D.C. in response to what he described as a crisis of lawlessness and high crime. The question posed to Pence was particularly pointed: Why did Trump not take similar action on January 6, 2021, when the U.S. Capitol was under attack by a mob?

Pence acknowledged that January 6 was a “tragic day” but emphasized that he believed Trump had done his duty that day. He also noted that he wished the president had taken more steps at the time. However, Pence defended Trump’s current actions, calling them an important step toward addressing the city’s high homicide rate.

“I welcome his decision to deploy the National Guard and essentially federalize the D.C. police department,” Pence said. “I know that it’s all now working in a very cooperative way.”

He further explained that if D.C. were a state, it would have the highest homicide rate in the country. Pence argued that the national government must act in such situations, especially since tens of thousands of people, including journalists like Tapper, work in the capital every day.

“[The president] is taking decisive action to ensure the streets of our nation’s capital are safe,” Pence added. “I think the American people welcome this effort to make all of our cities and towns safe.”

Political Backlash from Democrats

Despite Pence’s support, top Democrats have criticized Trump’s actions. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, stated that violent crime in D.C. is at a 30-year low. He called into question Trump’s authority to take over the local police department and accused him of having no credibility on issues of law and order.

“This is a completely baseless claim,” Jeffries said. “Donald Trump has no basis to take over the local police department. And zero credibility on the issue of law and order. Get lost.”

However, some law enforcement experts have challenged the statistic that violent crime is at a 30-year low, suggesting that the data may not fully reflect the current situation in D.C.

Trump’s Claims About Crime Rates

During a press conference, President Trump made bold claims about the crime rate in Washington, D.C. He stated that the homicide rate in the city is higher than that in notoriously violent cities around the world, such as Bogota, Colombia, and Mexico City.

“The murder rate in Washington today is higher than that of Bogota, Colombia, Mexico City, some of the places that you hear about as being the worst places on Earth, much higher,” Trump said.

He also highlighted increases in car thefts and carjackings, claiming that the number of car thefts has doubled over the past five years, while carjackings have more than tripled. Additionally, he asserted that murder rates in 2023 reached their highest level ever, suggesting that the data used to compare with previous years may be incomplete or misleading.
