Paul Wall and DJ.Fresh on The Tonite Show: Staying Relevant as Hip-Hop Evolves and Drake's Houston Move

A Legacy of Sound and Style
Twenty years after the release of his breakthrough album, The People’s Champ, Paul Wall has evolved into a symbol of Houston's vibrant culture. As an ambassador for the city, he has played a significant role in promoting the unique identity of H-Town—its diamond-grill wearing, slab-riding, and 44 tippin’ lifestyle. Over the past two decades, Paul has remained deeply connected to this culture, showing no signs of slowing down.
Recently, Paul collaborated with Oakland-based producer DJ.Fresh on a new album titled The Tonite Show. This project marks the latest addition to DJ.Fresh’s long-running collab series. The two artists sat down for an exclusive interview with XXL for a segment called “Talk It Up,” powered by DistroKid, where they discussed their new collaboration and the future of hip-hop.
A Longstanding Partnership
DJ.Fresh launched The Tonite Show series back in 2004, working with a wide range of artists including Freddie Gibbs, Curren$y, Raekwon, and Trae Tha Truth. After contributing beats to Paul Wall’s previous albums, Once Upon a Grind (2024) and The Great Wall (2023), the two decided to create something more substantial together.
Paul Wall expressed his admiration for DJ.Fresh, saying, “I love DJ.Fresh. He just brings life into the tracks. When he sends me the beats, they speak to you. It’s like he’s transmitting a frequency from another universe.”
The entire 13-song album was recorded on analog tape, with Paul’s vocals captured using an SSL console. Real musicians were also involved in the production, adding depth and authenticity to the project. This approach helped create a cohesive sound that blends Southern adult contemporary hip-hop with a modern twist.
A Journey of Dedication
DJ.Fresh has been immersed in hip-hop since he was just nine years old. His philosophy is simple: “The long way is a short cut.” He believes that success comes from patience and persistence. “It just means this is something we plan to do until we can’t do it no more. It’s a process. We not rushing it. We just trusting it. The more you do work for it, the more it will work for you.”
Paul Wall shares this mindset, stating that he plans to continue creating music well into his 80s. “It’s amazing that you’re not boxed in where you have to do this, you have to sound like this, and when you’re this age, you can’t do it anymore,” he says. “I really appreciate that there’s so many different paths and avenues and so many different branches of the hip-hop tree. Not only are the branches strong, the leaves are strong, the fruit that comes from them are strong, and there’s a lot people down there ready to eat the food.”
Houston’s Growing Influence
Beyond music, Paul Wall is a respected figure in Houston, a city that has become increasingly attractive to high-profile celebrities. Artists like Drake and 50 Cent have recently moved to the area, purchasing homes and spending time in the city.
“This is a big deal,” Paul Wall says. “Houston has not typically been known as a city where celebrities would come move to outside of Texas. I grew up in an era when people thought Texas was nothing but horses and cows. For there to be major celebrities, icons that are showing love to Houston, moving to Houston, hell yeah, I love it.”
Looking Ahead
In addition to their new project, Paul and DJ.Fresh have shared insights into what’s next for The Tonite Show. They’ve discussed plans to take the project on the road, details about the recording process, and even their thoughts on car culture. Their interview with XXL offers a glimpse into their creative process and the future of their collaboration.
