Packers Training Camp Update: MarShawn Lloyd Injury Report

Injury Concerns and Team Updates
During a pre-practice press conference, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur described the injury sustained by running back MarShawn Lloyd as “unfortunate.” Lloyd, a second-year player selected in the third round, has faced multiple medical challenges since entering the league. Last season, he only played in one regular-season game due to appendicitis and injuries to his hip, hamstring, and ankle. Now, he is dealing with a groin issue that occurred during practice on Monday. Initially, it was thought that the injury happened during a low hit from cornerback Nate Hobbs, but the team clarified that it was a non-contact injury that occurred earlier in practice. Regardless of the cause, Lloyd did not return to the field after the incident.
In addition to Lloyd’s injury, receiver Dontayvion Wicks also missed practice on Monday due to a calf issue. However, he returned to the field on Tuesday. Other players who were sidelined yesterday, such as receiver Malik Heath and defensive end Brenton Cox Jr., were back at practice today. Meanwhile, Christian Watson (knee), John Williams (back), and Collin Oliver (hamstring) remain on the injury list. Later in practice, third-round rookie receiver Savion Williams, who had a concussion earlier in camp, left the field after dropping out of action and was seen shaking his head as he walked off.
Focus on Ball Security
One of the main concerns for the Packers’ offense has been ball security. While the defense has been successful in forcing turnovers during training camp, the offense has struggled to maintain possession. To address this, the team focused on holding onto the ball even in difficult situations during practice. Left guard Aaron Banks, who has been dealing with a back issue, did not participate in walkthroughs or team drills today. However, center Elgton Jenkins made a notable return, participating in both one-on-one and team drills for the first time.
Banks and Jenkins have only shared snaps in yesterday’s walkthroughs so far, and the team hopes they can get more consistent playing time together soon. With Banks out, the starting offensive line for the day included Rasheed Walker, Jordan Morgan, Jenkins, Sean Rhyan, and Zach Tom. Despite being expected to compete for the left tackle position, Morgan has primarily been working with the first-team unit as a guard. He and Rhyan, along with second-year player Jacob Monk, are likely candidates to see action at right guard this season.
Exciting Plays on Offense
One of the standout moments of the day came when quarterback Jordan Love completed a 70-yard pass to first-round rookie receiver Matthew Golden. Golden has shown promise in practices, making splash plays despite being a rookie. Unlike many other rookies, he has been given more opportunities early on, which has generated excitement about his potential.
Later in practice, there was some tension when left guard Rasheed Walker got into a confrontation with defensive end Kingsley Enagbare. This led to the entire offense running a lap around the field. Afterward, Coach LaFleur addressed the situation with the team, emphasizing the importance of maintaining composure during practice.
Defensive Developments
When asked about the cornerback room, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst highlighted receiver-turned-cornerback Bo Melton, who has impressed during early camp. The team had identified Melton as a potential defensive back during the draft process due to his strong performance in key drills. Gutekunst also mentioned linebacker Isaiah Simmons, noting the team’s extensive work with him coming out of college. Additionally, he praised defensive end Collin Oliver, who was drafted as an edge rusher but has shown versatility in special teams and off-ball linebacker roles.
Another player making waves is Lukas Van Ness, who had a strong showing in one-on-one pass-rushing drills on Tuesday. Van Ness, who has been getting first-team reps opposite Rashan Gary, has yet to start a game since high school. However, with a broken thumb now behind him, there is hope he can improve in the pass-rushing department in 2025.
Undrafted Rookie Spotlight
For fans looking to support an undrafted rookie, Nazir Stackhouse has emerged as a favorite. The former Georgia defensive tackle has been generating pressure in team drills and even recorded a sack during a tackle period. With limited depth at nose tackle behind Kenny Clark, Stackhouse has a real opportunity to make the roster this season.
