Outlander: Blood of My Blood has provided fans with a deeper understanding of one of the show's most morally complex characters. This prequel series delves into the early lives of Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, offering a glimpse into their love story and the events that shaped the world of Outlander. Alongside this, the series also gives viewers a closer look at the younger versions of key figures like Colum and Dougal MacKenzie.

In earlier seasons of Outlander, Colum and Dougal were portrayed as obstacles for Claire when she first arrived in the 18th century. Though we know that Colum would eventually become Laird and Dougal would serve as War Chief, the exact path to this arrangement was unclear. In the original series, it was evident that Dougal struggled with his role, but Blood of My Blood reveals that he willingly accepted Colum’s leadership for the good of the clan. The question of whether he had any choice in the matter was left unanswered until now. Blood of My Blood demonstrates that Dougal made this decision of his own free will.

This revelation adds another layer of tragedy to his eventual death. Jamie was forced to treat Dougal as a villain, ultimately stabbing him with his own dirk when Dougal attempted to kill Claire. Knowing that Dougal truly tried to do the right thing—most of the time—makes this outcome even more heartbreaking.
