Virginia Beach Police Officer Involved in Serious Crash

A Virginia Beach police officer was involved in a serious car accident on Monday evening while responding to an incident in the city. The crash resulted in injuries to both the officer and the driver of a truck, who was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The incident occurred at an intersection where Steve Hammonds, an Uber driver, was present. He had just picked up a passenger from Burger King and was heading to a location near a shopping center when the crash happened. Hammonds’ dashcam captured the event, providing valuable footage of the accident.

“I could see the cop coming from a distance,” Hammonds recalled. “Lights were on, sirens were blaring, and it was extremely bright, white light instead of just the normal red and blue. They swung into the turn lane and I was watching. They were going fast, and that’s when the truck came and… it just happened really fast.”

Hammonds and his passenger were left speechless as the black truck flipped right in front of them. The impact was described as extremely loud, with people rushing to the scene immediately after the crash. The top side of the truck collapsed on the driver’s side, but the driver managed to exit through the passenger door.

The crash has raised several questions about fault and potential legal action. John Fletcher, a lawyer with Tavss Fletcher, explained the complexities of such cases. “You’ve ever heard the expression ‘You can’t sue City Hall?’ That’s true,” he said. “That’s what sovereign immunity is. Most municipalities and state governments are immune from suit if the activity giving rise to the claim is considered a governmental function as opposed to proprietary. If it’s a governmental function and police activity, public safety, is clearly governmental, then the city is immune.”

Despite the confusion and uncertainty surrounding the incident, Hammonds expressed relief that everyone involved survived. He hopes both the officer and the truck driver make full recoveries and is grateful that he wasn’t directly involved in the crash.

“That was one of my nine lives,” he said. “I pray that everybody that was involved in the accident is OK. I showed the video just to help you guys figure it out, and hopefully everything works out for everybody.”

The case remains under investigation, and authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the crash. As the community awaits more information, the incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement and the importance of road safety.
