Officials confirm fishermen killed in Tennessee River boating crash

Details of the Boating Accident on the Tennessee River
A tragic boating accident occurred on the Tennessee River, resulting in the deaths of two men. The body of the second victim has now been recovered, bringing some closure to a harrowing search that lasted over a day.
The incident took place around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday when a fishing vessel collided with a commercial barge. According to Sheriff Eric Balentine of Colbert County, both men were on the fishing boat at the time of the collision. One of the men was found dead near the boat, while the other remained missing for a full day before being located in a nearby slough.
A Witness's Role in the Incident
A witness reported seeing the two boats collide and immediately called 911. This individual also reached the scene before emergency responders arrived and discovered what remained of the fishing vessel. Despite the quick response, the search for the second man proved challenging.
Sheriff Balentine described the search efforts as exhaustive. Crews worked from 9:15 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, then resumed their search five hours later. The area covered included locations from Riverfront Park in Sheffield to near McFarland Park and Florence Harbor—regions that have seen similar incidents in the past, including a drowning just weeks earlier.
Challenges in the Search Efforts
Despite using helicopters and sonar technology throughout Sunday, the search for the second man did not yield results. There were even false alarms that added to the frustration of the teams involved.
“We’re trying to bring some closure, and at this point, we’re dealing with more of a recovery than a rescue,” Balentine said. “We explained that to the family, and that’s always tough, but we’re not going to quit until we can bring some closure and find their loved one and get them back to them.”
Personal Impact on the Community
One of the individuals who knew the victims spoke about the emotional toll of the event. He had fished with the two men for over 40 years and expressed his deep sorrow. He mentioned that he might have been out on the water with them that night if he had known they were planning to go.
Ongoing Investigation and Recovery Efforts
Officials from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed that an aluminum fishing vessel collided with a commercial tugboat, causing the individuals onboard to fall overboard. The collision happened on Pickwick Lake near Florence Harbor in Colbert County.
Multiple agencies have been involved in the search and recovery, including the Sheffield Fire and Rescue Dive Team, Colbert County Emergency Management Agency, and the Marine Police. The search has taken place east of Riverfront Park in Sheffield.
Hope for Closure
Balentine noted that there is a greater chance of locating the second man on Monday due to environmental factors and temperature changes. However, he emphasized that the team will continue their efforts regardless of the conditions.
He also praised the first responders for their dedication and hard work during the long and exhausting hours of the search.
Lead Agency and Ongoing Investigation
Although ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division and Aviation Unit are assisting in the search, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) is the lead agency for the investigation due to the involvement of a commercial vessel.
At this time, no information has been released regarding the cause of the collision. The incident remains under investigation, and updates will be provided as more details become available.
This story is still developing, and further information will be shared as it becomes available.
